Set-up / Openings: Brian Adam Douglas – ‘Due Date’ @ Black Rat Projects

The solo exhibition Due Date by Brian Adam Douglas (interviewed) opened on Thursday 9 March to a full house at London’s Black Rat Projects. Douglas himself was fine form throughout the evening, chatting with visitors and signing copies of his new book, Paper cuts, published by Drago. Among the guests, AM spotted artists Peter Kennard, Matt Small (interviewed) and Giles Walker. Also present was Douglas’s New York dealer, Andrew Edlin of Andrew Edlin Gallery, who’d flown in the day before to attend. Due Date consists […]

Openings: James Jean – “Rebus” @ Martha Otero

After presenting AM readers with teasers, updates, studio visits/previews, and  exhibition set-up posts on James Jean’s Rebus show, the moment of truth has finally arrived and the glorious payoff is in sight.  The artist’s first solo exhibition in his hometown of Los Angeles has opened (up until April 23) at West Hollywood’s Martha Otero and includes paintings, drawings, sketchbook spreads, sculpture, editioned scarves, and wall installations. Jean creates a immersive experience that feels like a romanticized dream where the environment is in colorful decay from […]

Openings: Gary Baseman – “Walking Through Walls” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Gifting NYC with joint solo shows along with Andy Kehoe (covered), Gary Baseman offered up a more somber and personal body of work at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery last Saturday night entitled Walking Through Walls.  Experimenting with combining his painting techniques with collage, silkscreen, and found photographs from his collection, Gary built a show that centered around the notion of “walking through walls – moving through the different divisions of society, challenging expectations, and finding freedom.” The new works also featured another common theme of […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Women: The Blacklight Paintings” @ Standard NY’s Le Bain

Armory Week can get a little overwhelming with the number of formal fairs which one can attend. By the end of the week, we needed to blow off some steam. It’s a good thing Ryan McGinness knows how to throw a party/exhibition. Teaming up with Country Club x The Standard, Mr. McGinness transformed Le Bain (one of Manhattan’s hottest clubs) into a living gallery. Utilizing his blacklight techniques, he again converted the ladies of the brass pole into organic subjects to compliment the eye-popping artworks which […]

Openings: Andy Kehoe – “Strange Wanderings” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Last weekend, the Strange Wanderings of Andy Kehoe led him to the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York as his solo show opened alongside Gary Baseman’s. As you can probably imagine, with the following the two have, the space was packed with collectors, art enthusiasts, and the local artist community. Andy didn’t disappoint as he brought along paintings filled with rich autumn landscapes and woodland creatures for all to enjoy. More opening pics after the jump…

Openings: Mysterious Al – ‘The Doomsday Papers’ @ StolenSpace

After more than ten years in the game, Mysterious Al finally got around to opening his first solo show The Doomsday Papers at StolenSpace this Thursday. When planning your first show, it must be a worrying time: Will anyone show up? Will they like the work….? It turns out Al’s show was the most packed we’ve seen at StolenSpace for a long time, and everyone AM spoke to enjoyed the work. We had a hint of what sort of work Al was making for this show when […]

Openings: Swoon – “Thekla” @ Metro Gallery

Swoon’s (interviewed) first solo exhibition in Australia closed last weekend at the Metro Gallery, but we have some pics for you of the opening for those who missed it. Entitled Thekla, the body of work, like many of the New York-based artist’s shows, included immersive installations as well as standalone pieces. Crafted from mostly from familiar imagery, the show also incoporated some new, never seen before pieces. More pics after the jump…

Openings: David Shillinglaw – ‘Hobo Chic’ @ Negre Gallery

David Shillinglaw’s Hobo Chic, opened last Thursday at Negre Gallery in the Columbia Road area of London, and AM went along to take a look. Shillinglaw’s work involves a multitude of surfaces, mediums and media. His bold, hand-drawn rhythmic text immediately draws the eye as it is the most prevalent part of the visual language within his work, and is so instantly recognisable – with the signature colours and filled in bowls – that maybe he should copyright a new ‘Shillinglaw’ font. Found, salvaged, scavenged […]

Openings: Slinkachu – ‘Concrete Ocean’ @ Andipa Gallery

Last Wednesday 2 March saw the opening of the Slinkachu solo exhibition, Concrete Ocean (initially mentioned by us in January), at London’s Andipa Gallery. There was a refreshingly mixed crowd in attendance, with a number of the regular faces at East End shows having dusted off their passports and made the trek over to Knightsbridge. To the gallery’s credit, the complimentary bar never ran out of alcohol, which helped maintain a cheerful atmosphere throughout the evening. As for the art itself, guest reception was enthusiastic. […]

Openings: José Parlá – “Walls, Diaries, and Paintings” @ Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery

Armory Week is a time when many art heavyweights of the art world converge on New York so galleries in the area save some of their best artists/exhibitions just for this occasion. On Thursday night, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery launched an epic exhibition for one of AM’s favorites, José Parlá. Entitled “Walls, Diaries and Paintings”, the show (previewed) filled the entire gallery space with José’s calligraphic style. Utilizing the techniques and reference photos which he has accumulated over the years on his travels, Parlá created a […]
