Last week saw the opening of Tibetan master painter Pema Rinzin’s first New York solo show Compassion Transformed at the Joshua Liner Gallery, and the sizable crowd in attendance couldn’t have been more impressed with what they saw. Last night, we attended the opening for Suggestivism, curated by Nathan Spoor, at Grand Central Art Center. This ambitious group show of over 50 different works boasts an impressive lineup of artists including Ron English, Todd Schorr and Sandow Birk. The exhibition reads like a collection of loose narratives, and the experience of each piece is like walking into the middle of a story, allowing the imagination to dictate the beginning and end. Openings: Insa – “More” @ Fifty24SF

Fifty24SF opened its doors to London-based artist Insa’s exhibition last Thursday night in San Francisco. During the week leading up to this event, Insa was busy painting up the town as well as filling up the gallery with paint fumes during the creation of his amazing stop motion video installation. The show included spray paint works on plexiglass (some of which incorporated moving parts and LEDs), prints featuring his signature motif, a sculpture, as well as photography featuring his work with beautiful women. Openings: Richard Duardo – “Ink On Paper” @ Mallick Williams & CO

Last Friday, Mallick Williams & CO opened their latest exhibition “Ink On Paper”. The collection of prints was from renowned Los Angeles-based master printer Richard Duardo. Pieces on display were classic examples from artists who have chosen in the past to collaborate with the Modern Multiples founder. Attendees enjoyed silkscreen gems from Dennis Hopper, Shepard Fairey, Retna, SABER and others. The show will run until Feb. 25th, so make it out if you can. Check out more after the jump.

AM stopped by Hendershot Gallery recently to check out a group show entitled A Strange Affinity to the Beautiful and the Dreadful. Curated by Maureen Sullivan, this exhibition explores the theme of fantasy and fear, two very strong influences in people’s lives. Openings: “Orange Sky” @ RH Gallery

We recently attended the opening at RH Gallery in Tribeca of Orange Sky, a group show that brought together a smooth mix of four strong artists – Atsushi Fukui (covered), Naoki Koide, Katrina Vonnegut and Hideaki Kawashima (covered). As fans of Kawashima’s work, we have always been drawn to his rendering of eyes placed in bright ethereal compositions, but the pieces exhibited here were more literal and dark, but wonderful to experience nonetheless. Openings: Kenny Scharf – “Three Dozen!” @ Paul Kasmin Gallery

After our visit to see the surreal paintings of “Naturafutura” (covered), we concluded the double-header night for Kenny Scharf just a street down and caught “Three Dozen”. This show was held in Paul Kasmin’s project space and consisted of 36 tightly packed canvases of the tasty treat. Each uniquely designed and given the signature Scharf spray treatment, the doughnuts got our belly growlin’. Good thing the gallery supported the theme by supplying viewers with fresh baked Tim Horton’s! Check it out after the jump.

Remi/Rough and Steve More opened their dual exhibition A last night to a full house at Blackall Studios. AM went along to see the work for ourselves. The two artists have been friends for years since they wrote graffiti together in the 80’s/90’s. On Thursday night, AM attended the double feature opening for Kenny Scharf at Paul Kasmin’s two galleries – the project space hosted Three Dozen (more on that soon), while in the primary space, Naturafutura was a showcase for numerous large scale paintings which drew inspiration from Kenny’s bi-coastal studio in Bahia, Brazil. The vibrant colors and subjects reflect this unique zone where lush jungles meet the warm tropical waters. Looks like Erik Sandberg’s hairy children are all grown up. His show Get Pretty Now opened alongside Ray Caesar’s solo (covered) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery last weekend featuring his colorful creatures created through his special mixed media technique. As you will see, his new body of work looks more mature and rich in content as well as some pieces taking his imagery in a new direction. More opening pics after the jump…
