The Smithsonian Institution hasÂ always beenÂ considered one of most prestigious museums in the world.Â It houses some amazing worksÂ including the “Portraits of America’s Presidents.” So,Â what’s a more fitting way to kick off the inauguration weekend than with the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery unveiling and inducting Shepard Fairey’s symbolic “Hope” image of Barack Obama. The Manifest Hope: DC exhibition, showcasing the spirit of the grass-root artist movement, officially opened it’s doors Saturday morning, but Friday night, select VIPs and friends were invited to preview the pop-up gallery.Â The packed house reflected the energy that is currently flowing into the nation’s capital for Inauguration. The first great group show of 2009 went down last weekend at White Walls SF. AM was in attendance Saturday night for the opening of Italian street artist Ericailcane’s first Los Angeles solo show entitled “Man is the Bastard” (previewed) at Carmichael Gallery. The highlights of the show were the massive installation pieces that covered both of the gallery’s front walls, ominously greeting attendees with a taste of the absurd scenarios found in the rest of the work on display. Oakland artist Deth P. Sun had his first solo show in his hometown since 2002 yesterday entitled “This Too Shall Pass” at the Rowan Morrison Gallery. Especially eye catching was the wall of small paintings carefully fitted together seen above. The exhibition closes on February 14th with the release of his first published book, â€œI See It All.” The 64-page book replicates the sequence, size and paper-weight of one of Sunâ€™s moleskin journals. Thinkspace and Ad Hoc Art pulled out all the stops for the opening of “From the Streets of Brooklyn” (teased and previewed) and Los Angeles was out in full force, packing the gallery to the brim to scope out the work from Brooklyn’s best graf writers, wheatpasters, muralists, and stencilers. Last night, Jonathan Levine hosted an exclusive friends and family viewing of James Jean’s Kindling. The Chelsea gallery was filled from the opening minutes with many New York art notables including: Susan Sarandon, Eric White, David Choe, Jonathan Viner, Esao Andrew, Travis Louie, and Molly Crabapple. Ron English’s “Mythographic Vicissitudes” (previewed) and Alex Pardee’s “Letters From Digested Children” opened last night at Fifty24SF. English reinterpreted some “myths” with this body of work showing off his skills by utilizing different styles of painting.Â Alex Pardee took on the serious topic of missing children by creating a body of work showing children who are eaten by monsters. Last night marked the opening of Yoshitomo Nara’s solo show at Blum & Poe (previewed and teased). The show features a large scale sculptural installation, and a new series of paintings and drawings focusing on Nara’s signature pastel-hued girls. At the center of the exhibition was a prairie-style wagon installation by YNG, a collaboration between Yoshitomo Nara and Japanese design firm Graf.
