Last weekend, Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) opened his latest solo with KP Projects in West Hollywood entitled The Escape Artist. This was also the name of the large showstopper, the locally-based artist’s painting that took center stage while exploring the above and below water creatures of his world. After painting a large new mural Turn Coat (covered) in the 13th District of Paris, D*Face (interviewed) unveiled his first solo show in France at Galerie Itinerrance. Entitled FORNEVER, the exhibition presented canvasses, sculptures, installations, HPMs, prints, and more. Earlier this month, Spoke Art’s New York location hosted the opening of Mark Drew’s new solo show. Entitled What Goes On?, the new body of work continues the Tokyo-based artist’s signature juxtaposition of Peanuts comics and 90s rap lyrics. The mashup of hip hop bars with Snoopy & gang by the Australian artist takes two presumably familiar elements for the viewer and generates a new refreshing point of view and interpretation. Openings: Takashi Murakami – “HEADS↔HEADS” @ Galerie Perrotin (New York)

Taking over three floors of Galerie Perrotin’s New York LES location, Takashi Murakami’s latest show was unveiled last night to the delight of his fans. Entitled HEADS↔HEADS, the body of work on display was dominated by a series of paintings inspired by the work of Francis Bacon as well as a monumental 33 feet long piece that was a homage to Japanese artist Soga Shohaku. Basel Week HK’18 / Openings: James Jarvis – “The Waste Man” @ Aishonanzuka Gallery

On display through April 28th in Hong Kong at Aishonanzuka Gallery, The Waste Man is the latest exhibition from James Jarvis (interviewed). Known for his commercial work as a designer as well as a fine artist, his comics-style imagery (often humorous) is influenced by “philosophy, alternate realities, minimalism and skateboarding.” The show mainly consists of drawings of his signature character, something the British works on quite frequently, as well as a few larger gestural pieces on canvas. After a successful opening (covered) in Tokyo at Perrotin last week, KAWS dropped the second verse of his tour of Asia with a showing at the gallery’s Hong Kong location. One of the highlights of Basel Week Hong Kong for local fans and out of town visiting collectors was a solo from Osgemeos at Lehmann Maupin. Last night, AM stopped by the Tokyo branch of Galerie Perrotin to catch the opening of KAWS’ solo show, his first of two in Asia with Hong Kong coming up. Attended by his Japanese admirers (some from his Original-Fake days), international superfans, and the usual cast of locally-based artist friends, the opening showcased the Brooklyn-based artist’s newest pop culture character-based abstractions including a sweet Snoopy airplane shaped painting.Take a look at more photos from the opening reception below… Discuss this show here. Openings: Amy Sol – “Bird of Flux” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Earlier this month, Thinkspace in Los Angeles presented all new works from Amy Sol (interviewed) entitled Bird of Flux. Working with a more muted palette and a predominately twilight setting, the Nevada-based artist was able to achieve a more introspective and melancholic feel to the show. Some of her elegant female characters were stylistically more elongated which carried over to her first exploration of sculptural forms. Take a look at the entire body of work here.
