French art collective and graffiti crew, Da Mental Vaporz aka DMV recently opened their show on the 26th of May at BC Gallery. Along with creating two new murals together (covered), the crew members worked & collaborated on canvases & panels for the show entitled The Wall, as well as built a DMV version of the legendary Checkpoint Charlie inside the gallery space. Earlier this month, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery unveiled new work by artist Mark Whalen. Titled Stranded, this recent exhibition by the Australian artist shows him delving into both familiar and new ground. Recognizable themes such as the different aspects of human interaction in limited environments are present again in this new exhibition. However, Whalen also shows how these themes can be re-interpreted through the cultural traditions of ceramic vessels and pottery, which highlights a new aspect in his technique. Opening alongside Dan Witz (covered) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery was Jersey City based artist Dylan Egon. The show entitled American Holy Relics explores themes such as American values, biotechnology, conspicuous consumption, and the shifting line between art & commerce. Dylan marries art and design with an appreciation for American culture and craftsmanship. Many components that we’ve seen in our studio visit with Egon were on display. Brooklyn-based artist Dan Witz recently opened a show consisting of a fresh series of paintings at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Entitled NY Hardcore, this exhibition featured a new body of work that utilized his skills of old master painting techniques depicting hyper-realistic subjects. We experienced a healthy mix of portraiture and his high-energy mosh pit paintings that have been long enjoyed. Openings: Torey Thornton – “Oh, Strange, That’s Your Name” @ Galerie TORRI

Earlier this month, Galerie TORRI in Paris opened Oh, Strange, That’s Your Name, a new solo from Torey Thornton. Although best known for his mixed-media paintings on large wooden panels, this exhibition focuses on a parallel series of works on paper from the young New York-based artist. It’s been a long time coming and finally Swoon (interviewed) unveiled her massive installation at the Brooklyn Museum. Entitled Submerged Motherlands, this exhibition ties together many themes by the talented and dedicated artist from Red Hook. Last weekend, the Oakland Museum of California opened a new exhibition, entitled SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the art and culture magazine Giant Robot. Along with a diverse selection of GR branded paraphenalia and publications, artists who have been involved with them over the years contributed original artwork as well as some wall murals. Dutch street artist Laser 3.14 (featured), opened a solo show, Troublemakers Make The World Go Round, at Galerie Bart in his hometown of Amsterdam on April 12th. Through this exhibition, the mysterious artist introduced the indoor versions of the infamous statements, thoughts and slogans that he’s been painting around the city for the last 15 years. Over the weekend, an exhibition to benefit CAMP2E opened at the Soze Gallery entitled Steer Ahead.
