Armory Week ’14: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we make a point to catch during Armory Week is Scope. Hosting a variety of genres, the event featured a diverse mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with here on AM. One of the coolest exhibitions that opened up during Armory Week was put on by Anonymous Gallery, who hosted a pop-up exhibition by the red hot Pryce Lee. Entitled Single Shot, this series of fifteen individually composed art pieces explores the instance where a life is changed by a single bullet. Through the use of a mirrored sculpture, Pryce literally reflects the viewer and transport them to a world where violence has the side effect of creating innocent bystanders all around the world. Recap: Joe Sorren – “Knock Three Times” @ AFA Gallery

For those who missed the Joe Sorren (featured) exhibition which just closed at AFA in New York, here are some photos you can peruse from when we stopped by last month. Returning to the gallery that showed him in NYC a year ago (covered), the gifted painter presented twelve new oil paintings collectively entitled Knock Three Times. Seeing Sorren’s expressive paintings in person certainly reminds one of how emotive the gestures of his characters are and how his delicate brushstrokes can create such fantastic dream-like imagery. We recently had the pleasure of visiting the painting studios of Brooklyn based artist Michael Kagan as he was preparing for his show at Joshua Liner Gallery. As it turns out, the final product was even more pleasing than we would have hoped. Entitled Thunder in the Distance, this exhibition focused on space travel and its various key components which make this seemingly impossible task of existing (temporarily) in space possible. Ai Weiwei’s largest show to date, Evidence, has just opened at Martin Gropius-Bau, Berlin. The exhibition features new works that have been specifically designed for the exhibition or have never been shown in Germany. The show references some of the artist’s most well-known work, and his widely known experiences as an activist. Last Friday, opening alongside CRG (covered) at Roq La Rue in Seattle was Peter Ferguson’s Fire In The Map Room! Dimly lit interiors and the moments right before dusk are exquisitely detailed in a muted color palette, with a style honed from his many years illustrating children’s books. On April 3rd, Camille Rose Garcia (interviewed) opened her latest solo show at Roq la Rue, titled La Danse Macabre, which translates to Dance of Death, a theme originated in the late middle ages to remind us that no one escapes the hand of death. On Friday, 4th of April, Wunderkammern Gallery in Rome opened the first Italian solo show by Aakash Nihalani. Famous for his street installations and works that play with geometry, perspective and optical illusion, the NYC-based artist created a whole new body of work for this show. Openings: Jeremy Fish – “Hunting Trophies” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Last night, Hunting Trophies opened at the Mark Moore Gallery, Jeremy Fish’s (featured) second solo with the Culver City space. Continue using custom shapes as his painting surface as well as elaborate frames with carvings, the pieces have a finished look about them and with the impeccable linework, appear almost produced in a factory. Armory Week ’14: Armory Art Fair (Part 2)

One of the unique aspect of the Armory Art Show during Armory Week is the fact that it’s spread out over two piers (92 & 94) on the west side of Manhattan Island with each pier themed differently. Pier 92 housed classic works from the Modern art period.
