Openings: “Buddy System Invitational” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Earlier this month, the Buddy System Invitational (curated by Sven Davis) opened at the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. The group exhibition centered on the interesting concept having each of the 22 invited artists bring along a fellow artist to exhibit alongside them with each contributing one 16 x 20″ & one 8 x 8″ artwork. Openings: Ludo – “Destructionis Hostis Vespa” @ White Walls

Last weekend, White Walls in San Francisco hosted the opening for Ludo’s (interviewed) new solo show. Entitled Destructionis Hostis Vespa, the exhibition is named for a creature from the Parisian street artist’s Nature’s Revenge series or works – a cross between a combat airplane and a wasp. Displayed in sculptural form as well as with paintings from multiple angles, blue prints if you will, the entire show was able to present a cohesive feel to it and also gave striking examples of Ludo’s work. Openings: Chris Valkov – ‘Schematical Sabbatical’ @ Breeze Block Gallery

Chris Valkov just opened his solo exhibition Schematical Sabbatical in Breeze Block Gallery’s gallery 2 space. We were excited to see the work on the walls after getting a preview on our recent studio visit and Chris’ debut showing certainly didn’t disappoint. Drawing references from his endeavours as an architectural draughtsman, Valkov’s exhibition materials presented a highly graphical series of paintings using a cohesive colour palette throughout. Openings: Dave Kinsey – “Black White” @ FFDG

Over a week ago, Dave Kinsey opened up his solo show, Black and White (previewed), at Fecal Face Dot Gallery. The show featured a series of affordable 8″ x 10″ paintings on chipboard, as well painted wooden sculptures and works on canvas. Many of the works were named after people who had made significant contributions to San Francisco’s past. Last Thursday, renowned artist and AM favorite Barry McGee made his debut with New York blue chip gallery Cheim & Read. The solo exhibition marked the return of Barry to the Big Apple after an eight year absence. The San Francisco Art Institute alumnus brought along a diverse arsenal of graffiti, folk and op art techniques for this prime showcase of his colorful and bold visual vocabulary. A couple weekends ago, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery hosted new work from Nicola Verlato (featured) & Caleb Brown entitled Pagan Pop & A Modern World collectively. Featuring two surreal paintings styles that pair nicely together, the exhibition allowed fans to look into the imaginative minds of these two artists. On one side of the gallery, Verlato (seen above) created suspended human forms placed in beautifully rendered fantastical situations seen through the lens of how Western society has continually attempted to suppress its pagan roots. Openings: Neck Face – “No Mercy For The Weak” @ New Image Art

Last weekend, the New Image Art hosted another “frightening” exhibition from Neck Face (interviewed) at their West Hollywood showspace. In addition to works and prints highlighting his special form of dark humor, he also created a shrine to the Night Stalker (Richard Ramirez), who recently died in prison, as well as accented the walls with his signature colors and aesthetic. Streets: KAWS @ BAM (Brooklyn) Part II

We recently attended the public unveiling of the new Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) mural created by KAWS we first previewed at night. The new mural location also contains a bike rack specially designed by David Byrne. This sculpture/rack entitled “Bold Wink” is a perfect eye catcher to grab some eyeballs as BAM patrons can see this new project opposite the institution’s Peter Jay Sharp building. Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Palimpsest” @ Harvard Reischauer Institute

Brooklyn based artist Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) recently opened a new exhibition in the Reischauer Institute at Harvard University for its 40th anniversary. This sparkling showcase features classic and fresh paintings for those in the Boston area. This great show runs until November 1st and the artist reception with Matsu in attendance on September 26th. Openings: “The Baxter Collection” @ Roq La Rue

Roq La Rue changed it up for this month’s opening. The works on display are from the personal collection of the Baxter family, who are selling some of their collection to move overseas.
