Openings: KAWS @ PAFA (Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts)

This past weekend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) opened its doors to unveil the much anticipated exhibition by KAWS. The show featured 70 works (old & new) at the historic institution and included both paintings and sculptures that spans some major milestones of the artist’s storied career to date. Spoke Art’s latest exhibition opened on October 3rd in San Francisco. Through The Veil features the work of Miami based Tatiana Suarez and Sheffield, UK’s Craww. The inaugural edition of STRARTA fair was opened this weekend at Saatchi Gallery, at the very beginning of London art week. Openings: JR – “ACTIONS” @ Lazarides – Rathbone

After inviting Londoners to his Inside / Out photobooth truck (covered here), JR (interviewed) opened his solo exhibition ACTIONS at Lazarides Rathbone yesterday. The work on display includes ACTIONS that the French photographer and street artist has worked on around the world like his Wrinkles of the City in Berlin earlier this year, his journey to North Korea, and his 2005 Portrait of a Generation project. Openings: David Ellis – “Hudson River Alley” @ Joshua Liner

New York based artist David Ellis currently has a solo show titled Hudson River Alley going at Joshua Liner Gallery through October 19. This exhibition showcases the beautiful body of work consisitng of sculptures and paintings influenced by his new studio surroundings in Woodstock, NY. The area’s natural and historical surroundings plays a role in the artist’s use of tobacco-stained paper and embrace of imagery such as black bears, silhouettes of soldiers, and the American flag. Openings: Gary Baseman – “Mythical Homeland” @ Shulamit Gallery

Over the weekend, the Shulamit Gallery in Venice, California opened their doors to Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) Mythical Homeland. Dominating the showspace was a birch forest installation that had photographs, drawings, and paintings hung throughout which references the experiences the LA-based artist’s father went through as a freedom fighter hiding from the Nazis (also illustrated in a recent music video with Die Antwoord).
