While in AM was in Hong Kong a couple months ago, besides attending the KAWS solo, the Art Hong Kong fair, an event curated by Suitman, the Daydreaming with… show, and Ai Yamaguchi’s showing, we also stopped by the Gagosian Gallery to check out Andreas Gursky’s first ever exhibition in Asia. Openings: Kid Acne – “Stand & Deliver” @ C.A.V.E Gallery

Over the weekend, the C.A.V.E. Gallery hosted the opening reception for Kid Acne’s (interviewed) newest solo entitled Stand & Deliver. The UK-based artist brought a selection of work to the Venice showspace featuring his “stabby women,” some of which was set against a backdrop of a patterned motif seen frequently in his street work. Openings: Shawn Barber – “Memoir: The Tattooed Portraits Series” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week in New York, the Joshua Liner Gallery played host to artist and tattoo specialist Shawn Barber’s (interviewed) new solo – Memoir: The Tattooed Portraits Series. The new body of work features portraits of notables in the body inking subculture (many of them the painter’s close friends) as well works featuring various selections of tattoo paraphernalia. Over this past weekend, San Francisco-based artist Andrew Schoultz visited the Hamptons at Eric Firestone Gallery to unveil a new body of work consisting of his remixed flags. Entitled Exo Uno Plura, the show explores the kinetic compositions referencing the political turmoil in the nation. Further pushing his skills, Andrew told us he worked and weathered the flags to age them. AM recently caught The Little Black Jacket photo exhibition in New York. Presented by Chanel in the old Deitch Projects location, the pop up show featured the portraiture of renowned photographer Karl Lagerfeld and his work with the fashion label. Celebrities in the world of music, film and fashion were featured in the photography such as Uma Thurman, Sofia Coppola, Kanye West, Tilda Swinton, Anna Wintour, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Georgia May Jagger, Alexander Wang, Waris Ahluwalia and more. Artist Tom Sachs is famous for his D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) artistic sculptures where he recreates various modern icons and feats of engineering as seen in his most recent show at Sperone Westwater. Openings: Ai Yamaguchi – “Ashita Mata” @ 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

Hong Kong’s 10 Chancery Lane is recently collaborated with Tokyo’s Mizuma Art for the first solo HK exhibition by Ai Yamaguchi. The show, entitled Ashita Mata (Again Tomorrow), consists of a varied body of work including prints, murals and an amazing large-scale installation composed of many individual paintings. Yamaguchi seems to be continually expanding artistically through the use of these different mediums and configurations while all the time remaining true to her longtime imagery of beautiful and young edo-period courtesans.

Like his currently showing exhibition in Lisbon (covered), master of all mediums Vhils (filmed) took the opportunity to showcase his versatility with a diverse selection for his newest solo at the Magda Danysz Paris location. After spreading his love with multiple murals throughout the city (including a map), fans of the Portugal-based street specialist finally got to see some of his indoor work including his new styrofoam pieces. Openings: “Gin & Juice” @ Ivory & Black

Last week, Ivory & Black in London hosted their first group exhibition featuring painters Andrew Schoultz, Cleon Peterson, James Jean, Richard Colman and Ryan Travis Christian. Entitled Gin & Juice, the artists chosen all have been influenced by various Californian subcultures which in turn has informed their work and imagery. Showgoers were also greeted by James Jean (featured) who made the trip over and took time to work in a wall installation. Discuss this show here.
