Streets: 1010 // Murals In The Market (Detroit)

With this year’s Murals In The Market from 1xRUN in full swing, photos of the new public art are starting to be shared all over the interwebs. One of the pieces that grabbed our attention was this new wall painted by 1010 entitled Abyss. Although what the German street artist contributed to the event over several days was one of his signature multicolored portals, he changed things up by adding some jagged edges. He further elaborates – “Love Detroit in all its facets!! Just had to paint something […]

Upcoming: Mark Ryden – “Diversiform” @ Hidari Zingaro

On October 15th, Mark Ryden (interviewed) will be opening a show at Hidari Zingaro, the gallery of Takashi Murakami who has been a long time fan of his work. Diversiform will only be an exhibition of rare editions from the veteran of the lowbrow movement, but will give fans in Tokyo a rare opportunity to see his imagery in person. The exhibition will run through the 1st of November. Discuss Mark Ryden here.

Releases: SABER x 1849 Wine – “Iris” Bottle

Following up on his sold out Au Jus, Triumph, and Anonymous collaborations with the 1849 Wine, SABER (interviewed) recently released another bottle he designed for the wine company. Iris is of a 2013 vintage, a pinot noir “rich with dark cherry aromas accented with notes of violets and spice, supported by toast and the faint smoke from the barrel.” The label features imagery taken from the graffiti artist’s Tool of Dissent painting, a burst of colors created in his distinctive urban calligraphy. The first 100 fans who purchase a bottle will […]

Openings: Allison Sommers & Ozabu – “Bruxism” & “彷徨 (Wander)” @ Thinkspace

A couple weekends ago, Allison Sommers (interviewed) & Ozabu opened their shows at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Bruxism in the main space was an immersive solo from Sommers featuring her increasingly abstracted meaty subject matter at times housed in various paraphernalia, completed by an installation that was like a record of how the new pieces were conceived and completed. In the project room, Ozabu presented nine new works collectively entitled 彷徨 (Wander), her debut solo with the gallery, with details that need to be seen in person to be appreciated. Depicted figures include himself as well as Egon Schiele, Marcel Duchamp, Lucien Freud, Samuel Beckett, and Audrey Hepburn. Unlike his 2015 solo show Untitled in which he created deliberately chaotic and semi-abstract portraits of famous figures, the new body of work is more planned and focused with abstract strokes and a textured pasto technique. Streets: Bezt // Etam Cru – “The Sleeping Knight” (Las Vegas)

Last week in Las Vegas, Bezt from Etam Cru painted a lovely new mural entitled The Sleeping Knight for the Life Is Beautiful Festival. Curated by JUSTKIDS, artists from all over the world came to leave their mark on Sin City including one half of the Polish street art duo. Painting a boy asleep in church juxtaposed by the stain glass image of a knight in armor slaying a dragon, one can almost imagine the dream he must be having. Discuss Etam Cru here.
