You may already seen the mural we shared with you yesterday painted by Sabek for Urban Xchange in Penang, so here is a followup on another artist who painted a piece for the event. The image of the phoenix can be seen soaring up on a wall near the Hin Bus Depot, created with bundles of kinetic wires, a technique that is signature to the work of DALeast (interviewed). What is interesting is the Chinese artist using a red palette this time, perhaps referencing how the the mythologic bird rises from the ashes. […]

Another artist whose work we’ve been following for some time, Christian Rex van Minnen (featured), will be introducing his newest work during Basel Week Miami. Showing with Gallery Poulsen from Copenhagen, the NY-based artist prepared two large pieces for this event along with other artists represented by the gallery including Aaron Johnson, Mi Ju, Mu Pan, William Powhida, Jean-Pierre Roy, and Nicola Verlato. Openings: James Jean – “Zugzwang” @ Hidari Zingaro

Earlier this month, as a part of GEISAI∞infinity project curated by Takashi Murakami, James Jean (interviewed) opened up a solo show at Kaikai Kiki’s Hidari Zingaro in Tokyo. Entitled Zugzwang, the new body of work highlighted some of the American artist’s imaginative imagery in a large scale form that mirrored his moleskin sketches that we have come to love. Along with these figurative gems created in a blue hue and accented with red and pink, Jean also contributed a more painterly triptych that dominated the room. Photo credit: Ksn. Some 10 days before the official start of Basel Week Miami in Florida, Copro Gallery has introduced two new works by Jeff Gillette, created exclusively for this occasion. It’s always a treat to attend Jeremy Fish (featured) openings. This particular opening was truly special as well. When we arrived at City Hall, an hour before the opening, there was already a long line of the locally-based artist’s devotees. As we walked past the line, we noticed Fish tattoos, t-shirt, hoodies, hats and one guy even had limited edition Fish leather shoes! This weekend in Toronto, Ray Caesar (interviewed 2011, 2013) will be hosted by Gallery House as he unveils works he has created for a new solo show entitled Pretty Little Predators. Created painstakingly with 3D modeling programs and released as limited editions and one offs, the Canadian artist’s work draws from life memories and events mixed in with fantastical and often disturbing imagery.
