Streets: Luke Chueh / Murals In The Market (Detroit)

Last month, as part of the Murals In the Market festival, Luke Chueh (interviewed) painted a rare public arts mural in Detroit’s Eastern Market. The Los Angeles-based painter decided to go with an image inspired by his thoughts of the Motor City as being the home of house music and DJ culture as we know it. For fans of Chueh’s sad bear series of works, The Soundtrack (To My Life) is certainly instantly recognizable and striking in large scale form. Previews: Laura Ball – “Keep” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery will be presenting new works from Laura Ball starting this Friday, October 16th. The new watercolors are collectively entitled Keep, a continuation of her exploration of the subconscious and the hero myth of Joseph Campbell. In San Diego-based artist’s mind, the amalgamations of creatures, bones, and flora form sanctuaries in her paintings where the endangered animals can find refuge in a rapidly declining world. On Friday, October 16 (6-8pm), Catinca Tabacaru Gallery in New York will be opening the first solo exhibition with the gallery by Know Hope aka Addam Yekutieli. Empathy will be featuring the works by the Israeli artist from his ongoing project previously seen in Tel Aviv (covered). The newest series by the street artist and poet includes a number of text-based photographic diptychs. On November 7th, the latest solo from Brian Viveros (featured) will be opening at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Matador, the exhibition will not only include new oil paintings, drawings, exclusive edition prints but also a large collaborative sculpt with Pretty In Plastic entitled Bullheaded and the release of his first ever art book published by the gallery called The DirtyLand. This year’s Moniker Art Fair 2015 in London will be hosting the premiere UK solo exhibition of Bom.K, organized by MYA gallery. Those interested in the gothic surreal imagery of Esao Andrews might want to get their hands on a copy of Contrast Magazine. The latest issue features a nice full color cover with one of the Los Angeles-based artist’s reoccurring images, various iterations of a ghostly ship. Inside the Hawaii-based publication you will find a nice spread of Andrews’ work along with a lengthy interview. Streets: JR / Nuit Blanche (Toronto)

Earlier this month, this year’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche opened up to the public in Toronto. One of the participating artists this year is French photogapher JR (interviewed) with several projects to engage his fans in Canada. Showing: Yayoi Kusama  – “In Infinity” @ Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Denmark)

Currently at the Louisiana Museum of Art in Denmark, the first ever retrospective in Scandinavia from Yayoi Kusuma is on display through January 24th next year. In Infinity features works spanning more than six decades, from visual art to performance, film, literature and design, presented in chronological order including a new series of paintings created specifically by the Japanese artist for this exhibition. Showing: “El Mac: Aerosol Exalted” @ Colorado Springs Fine Art Center

Currently at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, El Mac: Aerosol Exalted is showing through January 10th. The new pieces in the exhibition highlights El Mac’s signature technique with the fat cap, double line ripples that radiate out from his imagery creating an almost calligraphic effect. Included are some older pieces he finished up that were collaborations with fellow Los Angeles-base artist RETNA. Previews: Jim Houser @ Black Book Gallery

On October 17th, Black Book Gallery will be presenting new works from Jim Houser (alongside Issac Tin Wei Lin) in their Denver showspace. This particular body of work features some interesting assemblage pieces from Houser that mirror some of the installations he has created in the past but smaller. Still present are the Philadelphia-based artist distinctive visual language featuring selected text and iconographic imagery, but created with a fresh perspective and more personal scale.
