Openings: Soey Milk – “PIDA” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Earlier this month, Soey Milk brought her work up north to Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco for a solo entitled PIDA / 피다. The title references a Korean term that means to blossom or to become something else, something that applies to her continued development as an artist and her experimentation with technique. On display were a diverse selection of works including oil paintings and graphite drawings, some with embedded objects incorporated into the pieces. French artists 100TAUR and Hisham Echafaki (featured) are opening their debut exhibition Lusus Naturae in London on the 14th of October. The latin terminology utilized as the show title refers to creatures that can not be classified, or are labelled ‘freaks of nature.’ Curated by Butterfly Art News, the showing explores notions of anthropomorphism, human fascination with oddities or monstrosities, and our fragile relationship with the natural world through a series of paintings, drawings, and three dimensional works. Releases: Ian Francis – “Reflective Encounter” & “Two People Feed A Lion” Prints

Those who enjoyed the stunning new works from Ian Francis (featured) for a showing earlier this summer (covered) at Lazarides had an opportunity earlier this week to purchase some prints of images seen at the exhibition. The gallery released limited editions (run of 20) featuring the British artist’s masterful melding of photorealistic and abstract imagery through their webstore. Opening on October 10th at the Japanese American National Museum is Giant Robot Biennale 4, a group exhibition featuring works from artists curated by Eric Nakamura (interviewed), the man behind the Giant Robot brand. The fourth iteration (see 2009, 2012) of the show looks to be the most ambitious yet featuring artists like James Jean, Jim Lee, Kim Jung Gi, Katsuya Terada, Edwin Ushiro, and Yumi Sakagawa, among others. Showing: Taylor McKimens – “Stoic Youth” @ The Hole

This is the last week The Hole in NYC is hosting Taylor McKimens’ solo show with over 20 paintings of different sizes and shapes, all being portraits of two imaginary people. Closing on October 14th with an official catalog release and signing from 6-8pm, Stoic Youth has been on view for a full month. Currently, Heath Ceramics in San Francisco has an amazing new set of works on display from Brendan Monroe (interviewed) at their Boiler Room space. Entitled Morphology, the exhibition is a cohesive combination of mostly sculptural works, wall mural, and original pieces. Releases: Nick Walker – “The Last Ride” Print

Nick Walker (interviewed) will have a new print entitled The Last Ride on sale on Monday, the 12th October, at 3.30pm DST UK time. The print was inspired by a portrait by Butterfly featuring the UK artist in his signature vandal outfit riding a carousel horse next to the Eiffel Tower during a visit to the French capital. On October 1st, Roq La Rue opened it’s doors to a cavalcade of new works. Casey Weldon (featured) was welcomed back to the gallery for Hastemaker, where he continues to explore putting real people in surreal situations. Jeff Jacobson’s first solo show at Roq la Rue, titled Aphotic Ilk, explores a world between worlds. The dimension shifted vision gives bioluminescence to several species as they explore the ether.
