Recap: Forest For The Trees (Portland) – Part I

With most of the Forest For The Trees murals finished, now’s the time to do the first part of our recap of this year’s event (also see 2013, 2014). The name of the mural festival comes from the phrase “they can’t see the forest for the trees” which signifies the inability to understand the greater picture when you’re too focused solely on what’s in front of you. Previews: Justin Bower – “The Humiliations” @ Unix Gallery

Tonight in New York, the UNIX Gallery is hosting the opening of a new solo show from Justin Bower entitled The Humiliations. On display will be recognizable fragmented portraits that appear almost digital in some respects but are entirely hand-painted, a technique that further drives home themes of modern life and the influence of technology in our lives. Fresh off his recent artist residency at Facebook’s headquarters in California, Tahiti Pherson now has plans to bring his intricate hand-cut paper works to New York. Known for his lace-like works on paper, Tahiti pushes the boundaries of human precision and focus with large-scale installations and interesting monochromatic designs. On September 10th, Joseph Gross Gallery will unveil a solo exhibition by Tahiti. Entitled Pareidolia, this new body of work showcases what 1000 exacto blades and infinite patience can create.

This Friday, Lady Aiko will be visiting the United Kingdom to open a new show at Brighton’s ink_d Gallery. Entitled Edo City Girl, this exhibition will feature Aiko’s signature East Meets West stencil style. Openings: Mark Jenkins – “Still Life” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Over the weekend, a solo from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) opened at the Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles entitled Still Life. Aptly named, the exhibition featured mostly the American artist’s satirical and clever use of human forms as his form of art. Mirroring his street works, viewers can often time be taken unawares when thinking that his installations are actual people. Releases: Kozyndan – “Captives: Orcas and Pandas” Print

Later today, Kozyndan will be releasing a new print from their webstore entitled Captives: Orcas and Pandas. The new image is the third in their Animal OddCouples series of works where they pair two animals that struggle due to human activity around the world. They may be different species, but their struggle for survival is that same against mankind’s aggression and carelessness.
