Several months since their opening in the Fall 2014, Chelsea gallery Hoerle-Guggenheim opened a solo show by Marquis Lewis a.k.a. RETNA (featured) on February 13th. Openings: Kenny Scharf – “Born Again” @ Honor Fraser Gallery

Over the weekend, Honor Fraser Gallery in Culver City presented new works from Kenny Scharf (interviewed) collectively entitled Born Again. The latest solo from the American painter includes a diverse sampling of his oeuvre including new pieces on reclaimed artwork, assemblages, videos and collages, as well as an installation. Tonight at Honor Fraser Gallery, Kenny Scharf (interviewed) will be presenting his latest solo exhibition to his fans in Los Angeles. The new showing promises to be a diverse one, ranging from a fresh set of paintings, a selection of rarely shown early videos and collage, to his never exhibited before assemblages. Having painted over a hundred murals in Tehran, Iranian artist Mehdi Ghadyanloo recently made his debut London show. Entitled Perception with Howard Griffin Gallery, the exhibition featured a series of paintings, miniature sculptures and a cube installation playing with perception and depth. Providing some insight into the Iranian peoples’ desire for expression, Ghadyanloo’s artworks carry universal themes of hope, anticipation, loss and sadness. On March 5th, Hellion Gallery’s Portland location will be opening a group exhibition featuring works created on small wooden plaques called “Ema” on which Shinto worshipers write their prayers or wishes. Most of the artists like Stella Im Hultberg (above) used the plaques to paint on but some went took a more novel sculptural approach. Arguably one of the best murals created at this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) and one of the most unusual and interesting collaborations was the one by Esao Andrews and Aaron Horkey. This Saturday night (February 28th), Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City will be hosting new work from Sarah Joncas (seen above) and Camilla d’Errico (seen below). Both artists create portraiture centered on female characters but their imagery tends to be quite different, which will give the joint show a nice contrasting look. Joncas’ paintings have a cinematic feel to them with with a sense of danger or unknown while d’Errico’s pieces are more surreal featuring her characters with saccharine charm interacting with their creature friends. Last weekend in Los Angeles, alongside Robert Williams’ amazing new exhibition (covered), a group show celebrating 20 years of Juxtapoz also opened to the public.
