Setup: GILF! – “Shattering” @ Joseph Gross Gallery

Last Thursday, Brooklyn-based conceptual and activist artist Ann Lewis also known as GILF! hosted an unusual event in DUMBO entitled Shattering. She invited guests into a private space in the gallery and gave them the opportunity to individually shatter glasses and dishes that she provided. She will be using the ceramic remnants to create artwork for an upcoming show at Joseph Gross Gallery in Chelsea this spring. The piece will become part of a public works project that will benefit neighborhoods such as Brownsville and East New York. When […]

POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: Tristan & Matt Eaton

Working in the same location as last year (covered), Tristan Eaton created a new mural for POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) that somehow seemed to one up the previous one. Painting with his brother Matt Eaton, the Los Angeles-based artist conjured up a striking image of a samurai astride a horse, put together with his signature patchwork technique. POW! WOW! ’15 / Openings: RVCA #ThePod @ Modern Honolulu

On February 13th, the day before the official closing of POW! WOW! Hawaii 2015 (more coverage here), one of the main partners of the event, RVCA, organized an interesting show at Modern Honolulu, curated by PM Tenore. The visitors had a chance to see the collection of surfboards that surfing superstar Kelly Slater and RVCA artist Kevin Ancell collaborated on. This idea initially came into focus after watching the movie Blackfish and seeing the wild captures, captive breeding and sad life of majestic Orcas in marine mammal parks. The whole experience inspired Slater […]

Openings: 1010 – “Limbus” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last weekend, art fans in San Francisco saw the opening of Limbus at Hashimoto Contemporary, the debut solo in the United States for German artist 1010. The multi-colored pieces were indoor representations of the work he does on the streets – three dimensional sensory illusions that make it appear there are holes in the side of buildings and structures – a good example of which he painted as an installation on one of the gallery walls. POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: D*Face

Another piece that was among the first ones to be finished and signed at this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) is a new large mural by D*Face. Continuing his series of Roy Lichtenstein inspired works, the British artist created a mural showing a female character crying over the fact that her boyfriend can’t surf. Fully themed around Hawaii’s most famous past time, the image includes several details that reference the island paradise – a flower in girl’s hair that has D*Face’s signature wing symbol, waves, and a snapped […]

Showing: Kour Pour – “Samsara” @ Depart Foundation

Currently up now until March 7 is Kour Pour’s first solo exhibition, curated by Nicola Ricciardi, in Los Angeles at Depart Foundation. The show includes the artist’s coveted carpet paintings, as well as a wall installation consisting of golden powdered incense. Unlike previous versions of his carpet paintings, which used imagery appropriated from museum and auction catalogs, the artist has created original compositions and juxtaposed them in anachronistic and cross-cultural narratives. These pieces contain images of hunters and gatherers, religious icons and mystical creatures, merchants, lovers […]

POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: Natalia Rak

Working on one of the larger walls for this year’s event, Natalia Rak managed to be among the first ones to sign her piece. After three solid days on the cherry picker, the Polish artist rounded up this dreamy piece featuring a female character embraced by an albino tiger. Famous for her play with colors and using over saturated tones, this piece was created using different shades of purple and similar colors. Juxtaposing the sharp outlines of the female characters against the almost over exposed fur of […]

Recap: Parra – “Yer So Bad” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Another show that closed at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery recently was Yer So Bad by Parra. The show title was borrowed from Tom Petty’s song and perfectly matches the Dutch artist’s signature feminine characters indulging in various “naughty” activities. Along with the new paintings on display, the Amsterdam-based painter also released a limited edition zine which was available through Printed Matter, Inc, as well as through the publisher’s website later on. The exhibition includes a new series of works on canvas, using very limited color palette and […]

POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: Mark Dean Veca

Invited in for POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) for the first time this year, Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) took several days to paint a wall featuring his signature version of “Toile de Jouy” style patterns on Cooke Street in the Kaka’ako district of Honolulu. Because of the industrial nature of the area, the work from the Southern California-based artist and other participants in this year’s event are always a welcome addition in beautifying the local environment.
