Streets: KAWS @ BAM (Brooklyn) Part II

We recently attended the public unveiling of the new Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) mural created by KAWS we first previewed at night. The new mural location also contains a bike rack specially designed by David Byrne. This sculpture/rack entitled “Bold Wink” is a perfect eye catcher to grab some eyeballs as BAM patrons can see this new project opposite the institution’s Peter Jay Sharp building. Openings: Kai & Sunny – “Caught by the Nest” @ Subliminal Projects

Over the weekend, artistic duo Kai & Sunny opened up a new exhibition in Los Angeles at Subliminal Projects. Entitled Caught By The Nest, the new body of work from the British artists featured monochromatic pieces inspired by the book The Reason I Jump, written by Naoki Higashida and translated by David Mitchell, a long time collaborator with Kai & Sunny and author of Cloud Atlas. Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Palimpsest” @ Harvard Reischauer Institute

Brooklyn based artist Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) recently opened a new exhibition in the Reischauer Institute at Harvard University for its 40th anniversary. This sparkling showcase features classic and fresh paintings for those in the Boston area. This great show runs until November 1st and the artist reception with Matsu in attendance on September 26th. Openings: “The Baxter Collection” @ Roq La Rue

Roq La Rue changed it up for this month’s opening. The works on display are from the personal collection of the Baxter family, who are selling some of their collection to move overseas. The pieces in question were collected over the past decade and represent a who’s who of the pop surrealism scene including Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Audrey Kawasaki, Camile Rose Garcia, Lori Earley, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Liz McGrath, Glenn Barr, Donald Roller Wilson, Kukula, Ana Bagayan, Fuco Ueda, Joe Sorren, Brian Despain, and Femke Hiemstra. Tomorrow night (September 12) in New York, Cheim & Read will be presenting a show from Barry McGee, his first solo with the gallery and in the Big Apple in 8 years. Wunderkammern Gallery in Rome is launching their international project Public and Confidential on Sept 28th with the opening of a solo show by Brooklyn based artist, Dan Witz. Releases: Haroshi x Uniful Limited Edition Skateboards

On September 5th, Japanese artist Haroshi (featured) introduced his limited edition skateboard decks released through Japanese skateboarding company Uniful. Thug For Life in the Shibuya district of Tokyo was packed with people that were interested in this release that instantly became hit in Asia. Along with the signed and numbered decks, the artist introduced a new sculpture that was made especially for this event. Previews: APAK – “Stardust Dreams” @ Outré Gallery

On Friday (September 13th), the Melbourne and Sydney locations of Outré Gallery will be hosting new works from APAK. Stardust Dreams is the name of the twin showcase from the artistic duo and will feature luminous paintings of their whimsical creatures and their friends in a cosmic setting. Nuart ’13: Part V – M-City, C215, Faith47

This Tuesday sees yet more photos from this year’s Nuart Festival (see previous years) where artists continued to throw up murals.
