Openings: Skewville – “Amusement” @ White Walls

A couple weeks ago, White Walls in San Francisco opened a new show from the Brooklyn-based twin brother duo, Skewville (featured). Amusement features about 30 different pieces painted on a mix of wood canvases and found materials as well as sculptural works – all created in their trademark “urban playground” style. Releases: Tauba Auerbach x Paulson Bott Press – “MESH / MOIRE” Print

This past winter, Tauba Auerbach returned to her hometown of San Francisco and visited the studios of master printers Paulson Bott Press to create an exceptional fine art edition. Entitled Mesh / Moire, this new project stems from the innovative synergy of PBP’s wide array of tools & printing expertise and  Tauba’s seemingly limitless creativity with color theory & visual awareness. Upcoming / Basel Week Switzerland ’13: Audrey Kawasaki @ Thinkspace / SCOPE

As we reported yesterday, the Thinkspace Gallery will be featuring the work of two artists at the SCOPE Art Fair during Basel Week Switzerland scheduled for June 10 – 16. We already previewed some of the work from Esao Andrews (interviewed) so now it’s time to show you something from the other artist – Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed). Preview: Aakash Nihalani – “ISLANDS” @ Signal

After a recent solo at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery (covered), New York will be getting another dose of Aakash Nihalani’s work this weekend at Signal. On Friday night (April 26th), the Brooklyn space will play host to ISLANDS, an exhibition of new site-specific geometric installations from Nihalani. It has been interesting to see the NY-based street artist make a transition to indoor work and this newest project will be no different with him employing techniques of contrast and forced perspective to convey virtual depth or movement. Openings: Keith Haring Retrospective – “The Political Line” @ MAM Paris

Last weekend, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (MAM) opened a new retrospective of the late Keith Haring’s work entitled The Political Line. On display were a staggering number of pieces, over 250 paintings and sculptural works with a focus on the importance of Haring’s art as visual activism, highlighting the diversity of his socio-political views. The exhibition will be on view through August 18th in Paris and is made possible with the support of Citizens of Humanity. Discuss Keith Haring here.

Preview / Basel Week Switzerland ’13: Esao Andrews @ Thinkspace / SCOPE

Coming up in June, Thinkspace Gallery will be featuring the work of two artists at the SCOPE Art Fair during Basel Week Switzerland. One set of paintings on display will be from Esao Andrews (interviewed) who last had a solo with the Culver City showspace in 2012 (covered). Openings: Aryz – “Style Is The Limit” @ Fifty24SF

Spanish “wall painter” Aryz (pronounced ar-eez), opened his 1st US solo show last Friday at Fifty24SF in San Francisco. The young artist is mostly known for the large scale murals he has been painting from Europe through the US to Central and South America. His recognizable soft colors, subtle lines, transparent & “jelly” feeling character and objects, have enhanced many abandoned factories & big walls and has gained him a lot of popularity & respect among urban and street art fans. Openings: Jim Houser – “Search Party” @ Jonathan Levine

A couple weekends ago in New York, painter Jim Houser opened a new exhibition at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Search Party was the fourth solo from the Philadelphia-based artist with the Chelsea showspace and featured a series of eight new works and a site-specific installation. Those familiar with Houser’s work will recognize his signature visual language and iconography in these new works as well as the many intriguing collage and playful sculptural components. Openings: JR – “Inside Out: The People’s Art Project @ Tribeca Film Festival

Just this Saturday, AM joined JR (interviewed) and his crew at the renowned Tribeca Film Festival for the world premiere of Inside Out: The People’s Art Project in NYC.
