As we mentioned in our recent feature on Bäst’s collaboration with Greek olive oil brand Eléia, he has a show opening this week at the Opera Gallery in New York. Fans of one of Brooklyn’s best will have an opportunity to grab a bottle of their own (limited quantities) Thursday night (September 13th) at the private reception as well as take in the new body work – Germs Tropicana. Openings: Jeff Soto – “Decay and Overgrowth” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last Saturday night, besides new paintings from Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed), the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York also hosted the opening of Jeff Soto’s (interviewed) solo Decay and Overgrowth. As seen in our studio visit leading up to the show, new work features the lush new palette Jeff has been working with recently with inspiration coming from his search into his own ancestry and the resulting thoughts that come from that. For those interested, check out an interview here where the Riverside-based artist talks more about the work and of […]

Openings: Yumiko Kayukawa – “HAKURYUU – White Dragon” @ LeBasse Projects (Culver City)

AM stopped by LeBasse Projects in Culver City on Saturday to take in new paintings from Japanese artist Yumiko Kayukawa. Entitled HAKURYUU – White Dragon, the new body of work centered on themes that came about after the devastating earthquake that hit Japan in 2011. Through her work, Kayukawa explores personal coping mechanisms in the aftermath of an unforgettably painful event and hopes the white dragon will be an omen of good fortune for the future of Japan. For a deeper look, also check out this interview leading up to […]

Openings: Jessica Hess – “Fade and Finish” @ Spoke Art

Last Friday evening, Spoke Art hosted Jessica Hess’s latest exhibition, Fade and Finish. With this body of work, she explored using gouache on paper (as opposed to predominately oil on canvas paintings in previous exhibitions) and depicted urban landscapes in both daylight and moonlight. In this show, she also explored realistically depicting texture that is inspired by wheat pastes in New York, as well as pinup images that grew out of her love of vintage radio and movies. Check out some pics from the opening […]

Openings: Audrey Kawasaki – “Midnight Reverie” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Just this Saturday night, Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) returned to New York City to share a new exhibition at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This fresh body of work entitled Midnight Reverie features new direction for the LA-based artist that has entranced fans of her innocently seductive paintings. Utilizing dark black grounds contrasted with vibrant hues, Audrey’s subject seem to pop more than ever. Don’t worry, new doesn’t mean the old goes away as this alteration in style still keeps her signature eyes at the center of attention. Each piece has […]

Openings: Steve “ESPO” Powers – “A Word Is Worth A Thousand Pictures” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Steve “ESPO” Powers’ (featured) recently opened a solo show in New York for the first time in seven years and it was a doozy. As mentioned in our studio visit (here & here), this new body of work entitled A Word is Worth A Thousand Pictures was fresh and to the point in a manner that is simply ESPO-esqe. Exhibited at Joshua Liner Gallery, works large and small from tremendous enamel on aluminum centerpieces to delicate nuggets of wisdoms called Daily Metaltations were on display. Created […]

Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “New Work” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Just this last weekend, the NY-based Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened a new showing at the Mark Moore Gallery. Bringing with him several tondos as well as his irregularly shaped canvases, Matsu filled the project room with a juxtaposition of eastern and western imagery. Mixing things up, the new body of work also included two works on paper that he placed on a hand-painted wall as well as a re-cast of a 18th century erotic Chinese porcelain figure (customized for the Los Angeles area) that he encased in resin. Discuss Matsu here.

Just a little update for the Bäst fans out there. The NY-based street artist has teamed up with Greek olive oil brand Eléia to create a special edition bottle available for purchase exclusively at Dean & Deluca. This screen-printed bottle was only produced in an edition of 500, and features Bäst’s signature style using iconic imagery. Upcoming: Shepard Fairey – “Sound and Vision” @ StolenSpace

Coming up in October, Shepard Fairey (featured) returns to the StolenSpace Gallery in London for a solo show entitled Sound and Vision. The name of the exhibition is taken from the song of one of his favorite musicians David Bowie and embodies one of the greatest inspirations for Shep’s art – music. The new body of work (in-progress above) includes mixed media works on canvas, screen prints (wood, metal, and paper), rubylith cuts, and retired stencils as well as an installation of a record store environment, with customized vintage turntables […]

Festival Images (Switzerland)

Starting this weekend in Vevey, Switzerland, the Festival Images kicks off with a series of outdoor and indoor projects as well as associated programming. If you remember, the event (held biannually) was anchored by the Unframed project in 2010 from French street photographer JR. This year, he’s back with Shoot, a giant photo booth creating images for his Inside Out endeavor where participants have to lay down to have their portrait shot (see photostream) and then seeing their photo drift down over 42 feet. Other artists we are excited see work […]
