Teaser: “Winter Group Show” @ White Walls

This Saturday night, February 11th, the White Walls Gallery in San Francisco will be opening their annual Winter Group Show. A diverse list of artists are scheduled to present work including EINE, Blek Le Rat, D FACE, Kofie One, ABOVE, Greg Gossel, Casey Gray, APEX, Know Hope, Peter Gronquist, Robert Burden, D YOUNG V, Ernesto Yerena, Chad Hasegawa and Georgi Tchkhaidze. Last weekend, four artists presented a selection of their work at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles. For this showing, Matthew Bone blended some elements of pop culture with his provocative imagery, Bonnie Reid explored the darker sides of childhood in her work, Christine Wu introduced flickering images of her characters in flux, while Soey Milk painted her ladies holding symbols of agony and pleasure. Along with some preview images we showed you last week, we can now bring you footage of Takashi Murakami and his crew setting up his first solo exhibition in the Middle East, Murakami – Ego, scheduled to open later this week. Included in the video is a short interview with Mr. Kaikai Kiki as he explains his vision behind the exhibition at the Qatar Museum as well as talk about some new elements like an LED pedestal and a large inflatable portrait of himself. Coming up on February 23rd, New York’s Fred Torres Collaborations will unveil the Earth Laughs In Flowers series of photos from David LaChapelle for the first time in the United States. The ten large-scale still life photographs were inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson’s poem Hamatreya in which flowers are a way in which nature expresses its hatred for human ignorance and their desire to control the earth. At this year’s Art Los Angeles Contemporary, visitors were greeted at the fair’s entrance with Judy Chicago’s dazzling performance installation, Sublime Environment. As part of Pacific Standard Time’s Performance and Public Art Festival, the large scale installation was created with 25 tons of dry ice, with help from the Silverlake non-profit, Materials & Applications, and a group of 40 volunteers. Tonight in Los Angeles, Matthew Bone is one of four artists (Bonnie Reid, Christine Wu, and Soey Milk) presenting work at La Luz de Jesus. It’s been a while since we last caught up with Bone (see 2009), and it looks like Paradise Lost features a collection of paintings combining his provocative imagery with his love for comics, Star Wars, and collectibles.
