A couple weeks ago, Patricia Armocida Gallery opened a group show curated by Steve Powers (aka ESPO) at their Milan location. For Contemporaries, the venerable Philadelphia-based street artist hand selected ten artists from both the East and West Coasts of the United States, balancing the artistic dialogue between the old school and the new school generations. Just last Saturday night, Kukula filled the ground floor of the Corey Helford Gallery with her newest paintings, influenced by her recent visit to the France and the rich and decadent life of the old aristocracy. In kind, her paintings are more elaborate, intricate, and detailed than in the past made even more impressive as some of the works were her largest to date. A couple weeks ago, Paula Cooper Gallery opened a rare exhibition of works by Roy Lichtenstein from his celebrated Entablatures series. Serving as a departure from the signature spotted, comic-inspired pop art he carved his artistic niche upon in the early 1960’s, the paintings are based around the subject of “entablatures”; ornamental features found on classical building facades. Last Friday evening, Spoke Art Gallery hosted the opening of Sink or Swim (previewed), a benefit for the Japan-based grass roots organization PangeaSeed, whose goal is to raise international awareness on the plight of sharks. The show included literature, photos, artwork and members of PangeaSeed creating a dialogue as to why we must preserve and protect sharks and their habitat. AM recently attended the annual RxArt benefit gala. The non-profit organization dedicated to placing original fine art (see Jeff Koons) in patient and examination rooms of hospitals have long garnered the staunch support from some other big names in art such as Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, Yoshitomo Nara, Marilyn Minter and Ed Ruscha. Tonight at David Zwirner in New York, Lisa Yuskavage returns with a collection of mostly new paintings. As with her show last year in London, she continues to explore her portraitures of the female nude, all painted with her signature lush and erotic touch. For this exhibiton, the NY-based artist also appears to incorporate more elements of landscape and still-life painting into her narrative including a large triptych, the first time for her in this format.
