In his first exhibit with Seattle-based Roq La Rue since 2009’s Requiarium (covered), Brian Despain (interviewed) is primed and ready with a whole bag of new tricks for his upcoming show next month. Opening Friday, February 11th, Tin Machines and Mercuric Dreams will continue to highlight the artist’s expertise with the brush, with a new series of brilliantly rendered oil paintings of his personable robot characters in desolate landscapes rife with iconography and symbolism for the viewer to draw meaning and inspiration from. This exhibit, […]

Fresh off a “distorted” reinterpretation of his iconic Companion figure with Robert Lazzarini (covered), KAWS has now teamed up with The Standard for a collaborative project aimed at spicing up the interior lighting of the contemporary art collector’s home. The art-inspired boutique hotel chain, which played host to an intimate book signing with the artist during Basel Week Miami (covered), has been partnering with artists for a while now through their lifestyle product arm, The Standard Culture. As KAWS describes, “I love The Standard and […]

Openings: Brett Amory – ‘Intentional Abstractions’ @ Outsiders Gallery

Brett Amory (interviewed) made his UK debut with style last week and AM went along to the opening of Intentional Abstractions to see his emotive work for ourselves. The Lazarides-run Outsiders Gallery has put on some great shows since the concept of this small gallery space was refocused last year. This latest exhibit shows further commitment to bringing an exciting roster of emerging art talent to its London exhibition space. We’ve been admirers of Brett’s work for a while, but it was good to see […]

Teaser: Scott C. – “The Great Showdowns” @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

Those of you who are familiar with Scott Campbell’s work, know that one the greatest series he has created is his “Great Showdowns”. In these little works of art, the SF based artist pits archnemeses and natural enemies against each other in epic clashes that play out from movies, pop culture, and thru his clever imagination.  Over 200 of these classic battles will be on display starting February 4th at Gallery 1988 in Melrose and if we were you, we would make plans to be […]

Tomorrow, January 19th, marks the opening of the annual Los Angeles Art Show. Openings: Dalek – “Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz” Part 2 @ Hurley )( Space

With Part 2 of Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz, Dalek (interviewed) concluded his atypical, yet engaging dual exhibition at Hurley )( Space in Costa Mesa, CA, a stones throw away from where Part 1 (covered) was staged, in truly psychedelic fashion. Last summer, this same gallery space played host to another of Dalek’s outside-of-the-box creative endeavors, when a 37foot! canvas was painted for Chaos on the Edge of Reason (covered), only to be cut up into smaller chunks for collectors to go home with. This […]

Showing: Patrick Hughes – “Perspective & Perception” @ Flowers Gallery

AM made a special visit to Flowers Gallery to catch the show Perspective & Perception show by Patrick Hughes. The British surrealist painter is someone that has fascinated us for years, but it’s hard to put into words why (we’ll try), as his paintings are something that should really be seen in person to appreciate. Patrick utilizes a technique called “reverspective“, where he literally builds his three-dimensional paintings from the ground up before he paints on them. Utilizing the physical depth created to accentuate the […]

Openings: Nathan Mabry – “Armature” @ Cherry and Martin

Currently on view at Culver City’s always exciting gallery Cherry and Martin is Nathan Mabry’s Armature. The exhibition features five new sculptures and a sculptural fountain. The aluminum, bronze, and steel works are wonderfully odd, humorous, engaging, and both familiar and unexpected.  The artwork references such artists as Picasso and other modernists while at the same time influenced by African and Native American art. It’s a fantastic show and you should see it before it closes on Feb. 12. See more images after the jump…
