Close-Up: Banksy’s Studio Installation @ Bristol Museum

In our last article, AM showed you some great pictures of Banksy’s latest show in Bristol from the special preview night. Sir Banksy demonstrated that he could create a show that seamlessly weaved his witty street-cred with the pompous realm of high-society. Considering the limited time we had to enjoy the show, we went back on opening day to bring you a closer look at the mock-up of Banksy’s actual studio. Read on after the jump…

Openings: “Mood Swings” @ Carmichael Gallery

Opening alongside Know Hope (covered) at Carmichael Gallery was “Mood Swings,” a group show showcasing the work of seven urban artists: Asbestos, Bumblebee, Cena7, Fefe Talavera, Imminent Disaster, Labrona and Oddzoo. The show, which runs through July 2nd, presents a mixture of up-and-coming and established artists from varying backgrounds, giving patrons an opportunity to enjoy a diverse sampling of the genre. From the vibrant watercolor and ink pieces of Cena7, to the beautiful potraiture on found objects from Asbestos, or the gentle reminder from Bumblebee […]

ARTWALK Culver City: Blum & Poe, Bradford Stewart, Kim Light / Lightbox, Kinsey/DesForges, Koplin Del Rio, LA Contemporary & LeBasse Projects

Rounding out our coverage of Culver City’s ARTWALK 2009, we bring you photos from the shows on display at Blum & Poe, Bradford Stewart, Kim Light / Lightbox, Kinsey/DesForges, Koplin Del Rio, LA Contemporary and LeBasse Projects. It was awesome to be able to visit so many galleries and see such a diverse range of great art all in one visit. The only thing we’d change? Culver City should make this a monthly event rather than an annual one. Enjoy the visuals after the jump.

Video/Creative Process: Invader @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Invader will be having a solo show at Jonathan Levine Gallery at the end of June. Here’s a little video preview of his trademark “Rubickubism” process and a piece that will be at the show. The geometric complexity and attention to detail Invader utilizes to create his images is really fun to observe in this clip. Also, JLG has just relaunched their website. Not only does the new site showcase their current/future shows and feature their blog, but it also sports a new “backroom” section with selected works from a […]

Setup: AJ Fosik and Greg Gossel @ Shooting Gallery and White Walls

AM swung by White Walls and The Shooting Gallery yesterday to say hi to AJ Fosik and Greg Gossel (interviewed) who are both busy installing their new solo shows in preparation for tonight’s opening. The pieces in both galleries looked absolutely stunning, so be sure to check back for our full recap. More exclusive setup pictures after the jump.

Opening: Bristol Museum Vs. Banksy

AM has some great pictures from the opening of Banksy’s summer show Bristol Museum Vs. Banksy (previewed) and is excited to share them with our readers. Visitors to the show had very little idea what to expect, but Banksy pulled out all the stops with his new work and integrated older pieces flawlessly. Those familiar with Banksy’s work will recognize several reworked pieces that have been seen in the past as well as a re-contextualized NYC Pet Shop and Grill. What stands out most however, […]

Openings: Poketo Benefit and Art Auction – “F%#K Cancer! We Love Justin.”

AM was in attendance at the “F%#k Cancer! We Love Justin” silent art auction held at Poketo studios. You may not recognize Justin VanHoy’s name, but you’ve undoubtedly seen the work he’s done as art director of Swindle and his contributions to Obey Clothing, Cobra Snake and Wired Magazine. All proceeds from the event went directly to support Justin’s recovery from a successful bone marrow transplant after a relapse of lukemia. The big contributor of the evening was Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Paul Weitz, who went […]

Preview: Banksy Exhibition @ Bristol City Museum

In his grandest-scale project ever, “Banksy versus Bristol City Museum,” Banksy has installed over 100 works inside Bristol Museum, including an estimated 70 brand new, never before seen pieces. Work ranges from classic Banksy pieces to brand new sculpture, canvas and animatronics like those seen last in the NYC Village Pet Store show. A bit about what fans can look forward to: The lower floor features Banksy’s work exclusively and a re-versioned “pet shop.” Elsewhere in the museum, Banksy’s work is mixed in with the […]

Video: Interview – Pharrell Williams / Murakami / The Simple Things – Basel Week Switzerland

Vernissage TV caught up with Pharrell Williams and interviewed him about the collaboration piece he did with Takashi Murakami and Jacob the Jeweler at Art Basel (Switzerland). Gems of this interview include where he says “bling, I do not wear,” how he was reluctant to call himself an artist, and his love for cupcakes (really, are they THAT good?).  Not sure we would have chosen the same “…simple things” he did, but we loved the sculpture. Discuss Murakami here.

Preview: Andrew Schoultz – “White Noise and Silence” @ Roberts & Tilton

AM headed over to Roberts & Tilton in Culver City today to check out the installation in progress of San Francisco based Andrew Schoultz’s new work. The show will run until August 1st with an opening reception Saturday, June 13, from 6-8 pm. The work is an impressive extension of his figurative yet abstract fantasy land full of fire, rain and horses. Andrew uses his fantasy world to comment on contemporary events and the theme of this show is “blind trust and national public complacency.” Andrew […]
