Openings: Worlds on Fire (Grammy Show)

Art and music collided last night with the invite-only opening of the “Worlds on Fire” show (previewed) held at the Pacific Electric Lofts’ building in downtown LA.  The week-long exhibit features portraits of 2009 Grammy nominees painted and interpreted by some of the top artists in the low brow and pop surrealist scene. AM was on hand to attend the opening of the Gen Art hosted event – curated by Kris Lewis, Will.i.am and Justin Giarla (Shooting Gallery). Make sure to check out the photos […]

“Magic Tricks” is the latest solo exhibition from Australian-born painter and street artist Anthony Lister. His two-person show with Craola (previewed/interviewed) opens February 5th at Fifty24SF. Lister’s latest body of work veers away from his abstracted figural imagery and focuses on paintings derived from images found in his recent book, “Tales of White Trash Prophecy.” Read about this and more in the rest of our interview, after the jump.

Preview: Mark Ryden’s “Snow Yak” show in Tokyo

Can’t wait until February 7th for Mark Ryden’s Snow Yak show to open up in Tokyo? Well, you’re in luck because AM put together a preview of some brand new images along with some that we teased you with a few weeks ago. For this body of work, it looks as though Ryden is focusing on a singular theme as opposed to having multiple focuses in each of his paintings – a more minimalistic approach with a more uniform palette. Interested in picking something up? Well prices start […]

Streets of Boston: Shepard Fairey Bombs Bean Town

Shepard Fairey must be a Cylon… With temperatures in Boston as low as 8 degrees, there is no way he’s spent the last week hitting the streets of Boston. It’s amazing that Shepard and his crew are willing to brave Arctic-like temperature just to work the historic walls of Bean Town and make the city his personal urban canvas. As the city anticipates the historic retrospective at the ICA Boston next week (teased), Shepard is making his presence felt without relying on “Obama” imagery. Simply […]

Mark Ryden “The Tree Show” Signing @ LA MOCA

AM was on hand at Mark Ryden’s signing for his latest book “The Tree Show” at the MOCA store in Los Angeles. Hundreds of fans lined up for the opportunity to meet Ryden before he crosses the ocean for his upcoming show in Japan (teased). Ryden was joined by his partner and fellow artist Marion Peck as well as his daughter and niece, who both played the role of his assistants. When the signing started at 3pm all of the copies of the book at […]

Openings: Mark Dean Veca @ UAG – UCSD

Mark Dean Veca, who we just interviewed a couple days ago, opened up his show last night at the UAG gallery.  We had only seen the nice in-progress setup previously, but the finished installation looks even more amazing.  The show runs till March 15th, so stop by for a look if you have a chance.  As mentioned before, he will also doing an “artist talk” on February 26th if you are interested in attending.  We gathered some images for you to peruse after the jump.

Openings: Brad Downey @ Stolen Space

Last night, AM stopped by Stolen Space’s Dray Walk Gallery and saw a good turn out for the opening of Brad Downey’s “An Honest Thief” show which runs until the 8th of February. The show features a range of work using video installations, 3D sculptures, photographic prints, film projections, vandalized record covers, and even some cross stitch throw in for good measure! In this solo show, Brad continues to explore ways of manipulating and reclaiming the urban environment around us – often in humorous and […]

Preview: Worlds on Fire “Grammy” Show

Art and music have always been intertwined.  Whether it be Jay-Z including one of Murakami’s paintings in his music video “Blue Magic,” KAWS collaborating on an album cover with Kayne West, Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden collecting Luke Chueh paintings, or Dave Cooper creating a music video for Danko Jones, the examples seem endless. One of these intersects will open next week with the “World on Fire” show at the Pacific Electric Lofts in LA where many well-known artists in the Low Brow and/or Contemporary Art […]

Preview/Setup: Shepard Fairey Retrospective @ ICA Boston

First, we showed you what the streets of Boston are starting to look like as Shepard Fairey’s retrospective at the ICA draws near (here). AM now brings you a glimpse of what’s going on inside the ICA as everyone is hustling to get things set up for the exhibition opening next week.  There seems to be a buzz flying around the show as the registrars busy are sorting through the intricate stencils and as the install crew unwrap the crates of ginormous works.  Even Shepard is […]
