Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – Glancing at Twin Peaks @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last night AM attended the opening for Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) “Glancing at Twin Peaks” (previewed) opening at Joshua Liner Gallery. The highly anticipated opening for Matzu’s NYC solo drew a packed house. Matzu’s distinctly unique pieces exhibited his signature contemporary flair on traditional subjects. This show continued his use of bold color palettes and contrasting “splashes” that make the pieces leap out at the audience. The installations amazed the audience, from a motorized spinning carousel to the stunning masterpiece that stole the show, “Wherever I […]

Armory Week: Pulse Art Fair

As we previously did with SCOPE, here is a quick run through of the satellite Pulse Fair put on during Armory Week in NY. On display were many artists that we love including this large showstopper from Martin Wittfooth (above). More pics after the jump.

Openings: Hush – “Hymn of Beauty” @ Carmichael Gallery

Hailing from the streets of Newcastle, UK artist Hush (interviewed) opened his show “Hymn of Beauty” at Carmichael Gallery last night.  From a stunningly textured mural to the hand-finished touches that made certain paintings overlap onto the wall, the presentation was top-notch.  Although he maintained his anonymity for photos (above), Hush was more than happy to engage fans in conversation and to discuss his work.  We especially liked the poem he painted on one of the walls from Charles Baudelaire that was used as the […]

Cy Twombly – The Rose @ Gagosian London

AM recently visited Cy Twombly’s exhibit at the Gagosian’s Britannia Street location. Many people cite the still active octogenarian as one of the godfathers of urban contemporary artwork, with his graffiti-like calligraphic script and dripping paint inspiring many artists currently working in the scene. The show features five gargantuan paintings, each measuring a whopping 24′ x 8′. Combined with the hangar-like gallery space, they take on a majestic beauty when displayed together and exert a strong wall presence. Read more about the exhibition and check out the […]

Kaws – Original Fake x Medicom Bearbrick release @ Invincible Taiwan & Kawsone

It seems that KAWS mania is not only limited to the United States. KAWS’ latest vinyl toy, the Dissected Bearbrick, is a collaboration between Original Fake and Medicom.  This Bearbrick is designed after Kaws’ famous “Dissected Companion.” Like the fans that waited in line to see the opening of Kaws’ latest show at Honor Fraser (covered), fans in Asia (Tokyo & Taiwan) were also willing to camp out for a chance to purchase his rare products.  Last weekend, Taiwan’s premier fashion retailer Invincible sold all three sizes of the Bearbrick to Kaws’ zealous but […]

First glance at Armory Week: Scope Art Fair

AM kicked off its tour of New York’s Armory Week with a quick stop at Scope Art Fair. We’ll start off with some quick snaps of images that caught our eye that hopefully should inspire anyone near New York to come out and check out this week of amazing art. Enjoy all the photos after the jump.

Studio Visits: Todd Schorr

AM had the honor of visiting Todd Schorr in his studio recently to take a first look at his latest body of work for his upcoming show at Merry Karnowsky (teased). The rendered details, composition, and concepts behind each of paintings in this exhibition were perfectly planned and executed. Besides four stunningly beautiful large paintings, there will also be other smaller works, color studies, and drawings in the exhibition as well as a print release. Since his last show in Los Angeles was over five […]

Openings: Transcenders @ Gallery 1988 LA

“Transcenders” opened in Los Angeles at Gallery 1988 last night. The group show features work from Jason D’Aquino, Doktor A, Scott Scheidly, Jason Limon, and Michael Page. All of these artists are from out of town, but luckily, AM was able to meet up with Jason D’Aquino, Michael Page, and Jason Limon at last night’s opening. The growth in their work was a common theme that was brought up and we will let you see for yourselves just how much their work has changed within […]
