The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain recently released a series of videos with Takashi Murakami introducing some the artwork he’s showing there in his retrospective exhibition.  He waxes eloquent about his sculptures, paintings, and installations.  Unfortunately, if you don’t speak Japanese or Spanish it will only be eye candy to you.  The entire series after the jump for those interested…

Preview: David O’Brien & Tofer Chin @ Cerasoli Gallery

Fresh from a successful showing of work at Art Basel, David O’Brien has his second solo show opening at Cerasoli Gallery on Saturday, March 14th entitled “Explosions in a Mental Sky”.  Also opening in gallery 2 is Tofer Chin’s “Double Dip” solo show. We love the bold use of color and the combination of natural and geometric patterns that these two artists put to canvas. Sure to be a great pairing for a show – some of the pieces in the show will be huge, […]

Yves Saint Laurent Auction Drama & Fallout

Judging from the results of the YSL auction we previously reported on, it seems that in the high-end art world, provenance is as important as the artwork itself. The Yves Saint Laurent name, just like Andy Warhol’s and Jackie Kennedy’s name did for estate sales in the past, enamored bidders and helped draw in a stunning $477 million, beating estimates with nearly 96 percent of the 689 lots sold. Hard to know what one auction with such celebrity attached to it means for the general […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Works” @ Dietch Projects

Critically acclaimed art star, Ryan McGinness, opened up his first solo show in three years at Dietch Projects last weekend. The show was packed with people anxious see what his stunning new body of work looked like.  Using images, icons, and contemporary signals/signs, Ryan’s complex works are created using an intricate silkscreening process. Ryan told us that he labors on pieces for months to get layers upon layers of complex images to align and to bring them to completion. We noted varying layers of intricate colors, […]

Takashi Murakami Retrospective @ Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain

From LA to New York to Germany, Murakami’s historic retrospective has traveled across oceans and continents, and now, here is a first look at the exhibit on its final leg in Spain at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. This retrospective encompasses Takashi’s entire career, from the early days of his “Hiropon Factory” to the evolution into his now juggernaut like “Kaikai Kiki Studio”. The master and creator of the “Superflat” art movement, Murakami has influenced our art and fine culture in ways we could have never […]

Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – Glancing at Twin Peaks @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last night AM attended the opening for Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) “Glancing at Twin Peaks” (previewed) opening at Joshua Liner Gallery. The highly anticipated opening for Matzu’s NYC solo drew a packed house. Matzu’s distinctly unique pieces exhibited his signature contemporary flair on traditional subjects. This show continued his use of bold color palettes and contrasting “splashes” that make the pieces leap out at the audience. The installations amazed the audience, from a motorized spinning carousel to the stunning masterpiece that stole the show, “Wherever I […]
