Hawaii (2020 edition started this weekend), Thinkspace will putting their Exploring The New Contemporary Movement VII group show at Wade Warehouse (449 Cooke Street) on view from February 11-15. Showing: Jonathan Chapline – “Hunter Gatherer” @ NANZUKA

Last week in Tokyo, NANZUKA hosted the first solo showcase in Asia by the Brooklyn-based Jonathan Chapline featuring 10 new paintings and two three-dimensional works. Utilizing a combination of computer based skills and traditional mark making, the American artist has populated his paintings with increasing clusters of his signature croquis drawing-like characters, a process of quickly sketching the human body, distilling it to the simplest elements. These works from Chapline are balanced nicely by two lovely large-scale multicolored sculptures, bringing his subjects off the wall and into our world. […]

Previews: Casey Gray – “I Can Taste The Sun” @ Hashimoto Contemporary (SF)

Tonight in San Francisco, Hashimoto Contemporary will be opening a new show from Casey Gray entitled I Can Taste The Sun. For this exhibition, the locally-based artist has included a series of his modern takes on still life paintings, works on paper that celebrate the simple joys of life, and some of his wavy wood sculptures. Following up on his show at Perrotin (Hong Kong) at the end of last year, Barry McGee is opening a solo at the gallery’s Tokyo space today. Recap: Void Project – “Homeless” Art Residency

Back in November, Void Projects organized their second Homeless art residency and group exhibition at artist Axel Void’s home in Miami. Roughly 15 artists from around the world were invited to stay in the house over a period of two weeks to eat, sleep, and create together. The idea of this year’s residency was to explore the concept of “home” from a political, social or personal viewpoint, based on cultural heritage, identity or patriotism. Opening this weekend at Unit London, Transcend is a retrospective of Tom French’s work following his tragic passing. Featuring two of the locally-based artist’s bodies of work – the Duality & Parallax and paintings – the exhibition is a tantalizing and bittersweet look at how far the talented creative had come and a hint at the direction he was heading. French’s calligraphy-like compositions oftentimes had an illusory component, perhaps the most famous of which were his skulls in the Duality series that were composed of images within images. […]

Starting on January 16, a group exhibition curated by Sugarlift and Juxtapoz’s Sasha Bogojev will run for two weeks at High Line Nine in New York. Entitled ME: An Exhibition of Contemporary Self-Portraiture, the show will feature paintings and drawings by 22 international artists as well as guest speakers exploring self-portraiture. Releases: Mobstr x Karborn – “HUH?” Anti Gravity Sculpture

Mobstr (interviewed) and Karborn recently collaborated on an intriguing new sculptural edition (unfortunately sold out). The set combined one of Mobstr’s most recognized reoccuring text based public works and Karborn’s anonymous figures. The HUH? release was in an edition of 10, with each letter measuring approximately 8 x 10 cm and featuring some “anti gravity” effects (seen in video here). ⁣ Discuss Mobstr here.
