Previews: Chris Stain & Joe Iurato – “Deep In The Cut” @ Mighty Tanaka

Tonight, Brooklyn’s Mighty Tanaka will be premiering a duo show with artists Chris Stain (interviewed) and Joe Iurato. Entitled Deep In The Cut, this exhibition pairs two urban artists who feature uniquely different styles, yet both create works utilizing highly technical hand cut stencils. Previews: Friends With You – “Happy Rainbow” @ TMTP Cultural Center

Miami artist collective FriendsWithYou will have their next exhibition open overseas in Hong Kong this coming Saturday (July 22nd). Happy Rainbow will be their first solo show in Chinese territory and will premier at the TMTP Cultural Center. Preview: Meggs – “Truth In Myth” @ White Walls

Tomorrow night in San Francisco, White Walls will be lending their walls to Australia-based painter Meggs as he reveals a new body of work he has been creating on site over the last month. Truth in Myth will feature his comic-inspired imagery infused with kinetic textures and abstract touches played out on multiple surfaces. Besides the aerosol and acrylic on canvas works, his renderings of gods, heroes, and supernatural beings were also painted on plaster skulls, original 1980’s Phantom Comics, and wood knife sculptures. Preview: Jeremy Fish – “Where Hearts Get Left” @ Fifty24SF

This Saturday, July 14th sees the opening of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) solo show at Fifty24SF. Entitled Where Hearts Get Left, the new body of work to be presented is a testament to the the Bay Area-based artist’s love for San Francisco. As such, the imagery presented is thematically tied into local references including Native American legends, food spots, tourist attractions, historical details, and more all rendered beautifully in his signature style including his use of sculptural motifs. Melbourne-based Lush opens his first UK solo exhibition, You Become What You Hate…, tonight at a warehouse space in London’s Hackney Wick. The show includes installations, sculptures, paintings, sketches, prints, t-shirts and zines. Preview: Annie Owens – “Motherland” @ Copro Gallery

This Saturday night, the Copro Gallery will be hosting a new solo exhibition from Annie Owens, artist and co-founder of Hi-Fructose. Motherland includes watercolor works on paper as well as studies referencing Owen’s recent interest in her family tree with paintings of mysterious houses and characters. The exhibition runs through July 7th at the Bergamot Complex in Santa Monica.

Preview: Maurice Sendak Retrospective @ AFA

On the heels of the sad passing of Maurice Sendak last month, the AFA gallery in New York has announced a retrospective in loving memory of the influential illustrator. The exhibition will open on Saturday, June 9th, the day before what would have been the artist’s 84th birthday, and will remain on display through Labor Day. The showing at the SoHo space will feature nearly 50 original works, including published pieces, conceptual art and a bronze sculpture.
