Preview: “JEST in Time: The Phylogenesis of Clowns” Benefit @ Distinction Gallery

Clowns are different things to different people. Some have an intense fear of clowns (Coulrophobia), or for some, they are a source of amusement and entertainment. These costumed and masked performers are also fertile subject matter for artists (here and here), but the exhibition we are letting you know about this time, “JEST in Time: The Phylogenesis of Clowns”, will be a benefit show (with all profits to benefit ArtHatch and art scholarships at Palomar college). You can also get a clue as to what […]

A pretty interesting event is taking place this Wednesday night at the Hurley Space (7-10pm at 1945 Placentia Ave., Costa Mesa, CA) down in Orange County. James Marshall (Dalek) (interviewed) will be exhibiting his 37-foot continuous wall mural, “Chaos on the Edge of Reason”, with the kicker being that pieces of the painting will be cut out and framed on demand for attendees to take home at $200 per square feet (2×2, 3×3 and 4×4 feet). Preview: Junko Mizuno, Aiko, and Samuel Lowder – “Vivid Fiction” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

This Saturday, July 31, Merry Karnowsky Gallery will be hosting a new show, “Vivid Fiction,” a joint venture between artists Junko Mizuno, Aiko, and Samuel Lowder aka FrePrs. Although it seems to be a somewhat discordant grouping, each artist has something to offer to those that attend. Aiko Nakagawa, formerly part of the  Faile (featured), continues to develop her own imagery and style, showing a feminine touch that has been missing from the Brooklyn collective since she left. Junko Mizuno will be bringing her unique […]

SDCC ’10: David Choe – “Munko” Figure

When AM visited David Choe’s (featured) secret lair several months ago, we not only got an advance peek at his recently released monograph, but we also got a first look at his Whale “Munko”. The figure comes in 11 colorways in 3 unique sculpted bodies (+1 chase colorway). Even better news […]

Preview: Viva La Revolucion @ MCASD

AM headed down to San Diego on Friday morning to catch the press preview of Viva La Revolucion at MCASD (check out our street coverage here). It was great to wander around the Jacobs Building and get a sneak peek of everything the artists have been working on indoors after seeing all the amazing pieces that have been popping up on the streets of the city. Pedro Alonzo, the exhibition’s curator, led a talk around the museum and spoke about the different artists and their work. Shepard Fairey, David Ellis, Stephan […]

Preview / Installation: AJ Fosik & Bill McRight – “Count Back From Nothing” @ David B. Smith Gallery

David B. Smith Gallery weighs in this month with yet another stellar looking exhibition opening Friday, July 16th with the pairing of sculptors AJ Fosik and Bill McRight in the two person show “Count Back From Nothing”. Fosik’s three dimensional animalia sculptures have jumped off the walls at us here at AM on many occasions before, and we’re always excited to see what this artist brings with each set of new work. The layering of found wood and other elements that goes into each of […]
