Showing: Ron Ulicny – “New Works” @ Spoke Art

Earlier this month, the Spoke Art Gallery opened its doors to a solo exhibition from Portland-based artist Ron Ulicny. His collection of New Works feature familiar objects that have been modified in novel ways to give new meaning to the pieces. The show included sixteen new sculptural creations, each challenging the viewer to find new purpose in the transformed items while showing off Ulicny’s humor and wit. More photos after the jump…

AM stopped by Bar Lane Studios in York to take a look at Claire Hind & Gary Winters’ collaborative installation and exhibition entitled Kong Lear. The title, and also the subject matter is a juxtaposition of imagery from the celebrated tale of King Kong interwoven with texts from King Lear, and also includes new writing. At the Galleri Profilen in Denmark, Armsrock (interviewed) currently has a new body of work on display entitled Should The Light Not Take Us. Continuing to develop his gallery repertoire, the thoughtful street artist is working again in the same large-scale that impressed us during his showing at the Vejle Museum of Art back in November. For those curious about the Takashi Murakami exhibition at the Qatar Museum that opened today, which included a large inflatable replica of the artist, here are some photos for you. With these shots, you can see more clearly the vision for this showing that the renowned Japanese artist had. Showing: Nicoletta Ceccoli – “Girls Don’t Cry” @ Roq La Rue

While in Seattle, we stopped by the Roq La Rue Gallery to check out the newest solo show from Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed). Girls Don’t Cry continues the San Marino-based artist’s series of paintings featuring young girls in precarious fairy-tale like situations, all rendered beautifully in her soft palette and touch. Included were several paintings that might make fans of vegetables consider going back to eating meat… More photos after the jump…

Showing: “Conjoined II” @ Copro Gallery

Conjoined II, a followup to last year’s successful debut as a group show, recently opened at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica. Once again, Chet Zar’s (interviewed) was tapped to bring together a selection of sculptural work from his friends and peers, which mostly focused on objects of the bizarre, fantastic, and surreal. Geoff McFetridge, who recently dazzled us with his collaborations and showing with Heath Ceramics, traveled up north a bit to the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for a solo exhibition at their University Art Gallery. The Los Angeles-based McFetridge not only displayed some new paintings with his signature minimalistic wit and associated wall murals, but also gave a well-attended lecture that spanned topics informed by his experience not only artist but also as an animator, graphic designer, and filmmaker. Showing: Yayoi Kusama – “The Obliteration Room” @ Queensland Gallery of Modern Art

As part of her Look Now, See Forever exhibition (more on this later) that opened last month at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art in Australia, Yayoi Kusama included an immersive installation piece that encompass an entire room dubbed The Obliteration Room. What began as a completely whited-out setting (furniture included), ended up covered by thousands of her signature dots – aided by placement of colorful stickers by children who visited the exhibition over the course of two weeks. After an impressive showing in New York during the month of October where he elevated the complexity and creativity of his sculptural pieces to the next level, AJ Fosik has now decided to share his work with the people of Paris.
