Earlier today, NOWNESS released a new video feature on American artist Robert Longo and his iconic charcoal drawings. Included in the footage is an interview with the NY-based painter where he touches on many topics including why he works in black & white, how he made it big with his Man in the City imagery, how to stay relevant as an artist gets older, and the idea of truth. Upcoming: Peter Chan – “Soliloquy” @ Copro Gallery

Next Saturday night (June 22nd), the Copro Gallery in Los Angeles will be presenting a new show from Peter Chan. For his first solo with the gallery and in the United States, the Toronto-based artist has created a series of works collectively entitled Soliloquy, a fitting title considering the introspective contemplations he had while producing these paintings (see statement below). Videos: Ai Weiwei – Time Magazine Cover

After coming in as the runner-up for TIME magazine’s Person of the Year in 2011, things of come full circle for Ai Weiwei. The latest issue of the magazine features an illustration from the Chinese artist – activist with the title “The World According To China” overlaid on an oversized map of China compared to the globe created from old money symbols and flowers of prosperity. Berndnaut Smilde‘s work is defined by the temporary and the ephemeral. It lives for a few seconds and disappears, without a trace that it was ever there, documented only through photographs and video. Videos: Gary Baseman X Die Antwoord – “Buckingham Warrior” on MOCAtv

MOCAtv just released their newest video Buckingham Warrior, a tale inspired by Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) father who survived the holocaust. Ben Baseman fought the Nazi invasion in Ukraine’s birch tree forests for almost four years and this new music video (animated by Peter Markowski and scored by South-African duo Die Antwoord) tells his story in his son’s signature imagery. This was created in association with Gary’s current exhibition, The Door Is Always Open (covered) at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Discuss Gary Baseman here.

Geoff McFetridge @ Walker Art Center

Earlier this year, artist, animator, and graphic designer Geoff McFetridge visited Minneapolis to speak at the Insights Design Lecture Series 2013 at the Walker Art Center. While there, he also worked on a filmstrip style massive wraparound mural featuring his minimalistic imagery. Videos: Eric Shaw x Wild Nothing Music Video

If like us, you enjoy the superflat yet explosive paintings of New York painter Eric Shaw, you might be interested to see his work come to life. Shaw recently collaborated with indie rock band Wild Nothing and director / animator Hayley Atkins on the video for their single A Dancing Shell. Furthermore, Eric Shaw also produced the limited edition packaging (pictured below) for the band’s Empty Estate ep, from which the track is taken. Discuss this artist here.
