Art Focus/Video: Cory Arcangel

Cory Arcangel recently had his first auction sale on June 4 at Wright in Chicago.  The piece, a 15-minute movie titled “Super Mario Movie“ (part 1 seen above), is a hacked and reprogrammed video game cartridge that follows the game’s hero as he travels through a corrupted game universe and questions his own existence as his world gradually falls apart.  Deitch Projects where the video was first shown) director Kathy Grayson refers to it as “the most dynamic piece of new media art in [her] […]

Video: Studio Visit/Preview – Jeff Koons @ Serpentine Gallery

After our last visit in April, Channel 4 in the UK gives us another opportunity to see Jeff Koons’ studio with this new video. Although you can see many projects Koons is working on with his 100-strong assistant crew, this visit mostly focuses on his first major exhibition in a public gallery in England (Serpentine Gallery on July 2nd). This exhibition focuses on paintings and sculptures from Koons’ Popeye series, a comment on the current economic crisis because the cartoon character was originally conceived during […]

Video: Dalek Hurley HQ Timelapse

Here is a nice timelapse video just released of Dalek (interviewed) painting the headquarters of Hurley in Orange County. It’s always nice to see artists we follow getting recognition for their work.  Other recent examples that come to mind include David Choe painting offices of Facebook and Barry Mcgee’s work with RVCA’s headquarters. Discuss Dalek here.

Streets/Video: ABOVE – “Ears, Tears, & Fears”

ABOVE (interviewed) made a stop in Madrid, Spain as part of his current European tour. He made sure to give the locals a little love with some fresh street pieces that highlight his excellent placement skills and clever play on words. A video and detailed photos of both pieces after the jump.

Video: Bristol Museum Vs. Banksy

Don’t we all wish that we could take a quick trip up to Bristol to catch the madhouse of artistic antics known as “Bristol Museum Vs. Banksy“? Well, one of our good friends from San Francisco actually made a special trip to the UK just to spend a weekend soaking in all the Banksy goodness, taking the time to make this rad video that captures the spirit of this amazing show. This video not only documents the details inside, but also some of the iconic […]

Video: Art of Nick Walker & Josh Keyes in Black Eyed Peas – “I Gotta Feeling” Music Video

Our number one passion here at AM is art, but music certainly comes in a close second. The “I Gotta Feeling” video from the Black Eyed Peas melds together these two things we love. It’s awesome to know that there’s a director out there with a fine taste in art. In the music video, a couple of Nick Walker (interviewed) canvases adorn the walls and a nod is made to his “bicycle vandal” character, one of the works we saw in his “A Sequence of […]

Video: BBC Interview with JR

French street photographer JR speaks with BBC about the inspiration behind his work in Rio de Janeiro’s oldest favela. Particularly fascinating is what drew him to the city, the symbolism behind the placement of his pieces and hearing from the subjects who were photographed. See the interview with JR. Discuss JR here.

Video: Vernissage – Basel Week Switzerland

Another great video walkthrough by Vernissage TV from Art Basel Switzerland.  If you can get past the videographer’s apparent shoe fetish, you will be able to get a good idea of the atmosphere as well as see some glimpses of the artwork.  For more photos check out our previous post. Video: Patti Astor’s “Fun!” Documentary Trailer

AM just found out that Patti Astor (the legendary founder of NYC’s FUN GALLERY) is hard at work on a feature documentary about the early days of the NYC scene. Best known to you as the blond reporter in “Wild Style,” the doc tells the story of the first art gallery in NY’s East Village and the convergence of rappers, breakdancers, graffiti artists and indie filmmakers who contributed to the birth of the hip hop aesthetic. Patti was one of the first curators to show […]
