Openings: Saber – “The Ugly American” @ The Outsiders (London)

After Newcastle, LA-based graffiti artist SABER (interviewed) launched the second installment of his first European solo show The Ugly American at The Outsiders in London. Suffering from epilepsy and being denied healthcare, the politically engaged artist decided to voice some issues and battles for universal care by attacking and transforming iconic images of US and Union Jack flags, using found packing crates. Saber’s abstract paintings, made with layered collages and painted paper, combine harmoniously to form a delicate texture with his strong and powerful sharp signature lines. Frieze Art Fair ’13 : Highlights (London) – Part 1

Frieze Art Fair returns to London from 17 to 20 October 2013 showcasing 152 galleries from around the world. Jeff Koons x Dom Pérignon Sculpture Package (London)

Following the recent announcement for the release of the Jeff Koons x Dom Pérignon Sculpture Package (covered here), we were invited to the launch party during Frieze art week in London. For those who can’t afford the £15,500 which includes a mini-Balloon Venus along with the Rosé champagne inside, you can opt for the special Koons boxes of Dom Pérignon Blanc de Blancs (£130) and Rose (£315) sold at a pop-up at Claridge’s. Openings: Dmitry Shorin – “Flight” @ Erarta Galleries (London)

Russian artist Dmitry Shorin is currently exhibiting at Erarta Galleries in London until the 16th of November. The body of work titled Flight features paintings that work on his now familiar aviation theme. The Saatchi Gallery and Christie’s are partnering for Thinking Big, a special auction of major contemporary sculpture and installation on 17 October offered to support the Saatchi Gallery’s continuing policy for free entry to all exhibitions, and free education programme for schools. To accommodate the monumental scale and scope of the work, Thinking Big is exhibited at The Sorting Office, a vast former postal depot in central London. Openings: JR – “ACTIONS” @ Lazarides – Rathbone

After inviting Londoners to his Inside / Out photobooth truck (covered here), JR (interviewed) opened his solo exhibition ACTIONS at Lazarides Rathbone yesterday. The work on display includes ACTIONS that the French photographer and street artist has worked on around the world like his Wrinkles of the City in Berlin earlier this year, his journey to North Korea, and his 2005 Portrait of a Generation project. Studio Visit: Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada

Earlier this year, we had the chance to visit Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada in his studio in Barcelona. Known for his large scale charcoal photorealistic portraits on buildings since the 90s,  Jorge will be presenting a new solo show in Paris at Mathgoth Gallery on October 11th called TEXTURE URBAINE. Streets: JR (London)

As we mentioned last month, JR (interviewed) is returning to London after five years with a two-part solo exhibition, ACTIONS, at Lazarides Rathbone and multiple sites across the capital. The Inside / Out photobooth truck showed up last week and Londoners’ black and white portraits were pasted alongside the Somerset House. La Tour 13 (Paris)

Over looking the Seine, La Tour Paris 13‎ is a project curated by Mehdi Ben Cheikh from Galerie Itinerrance. During a year, the entire building was painted by 100 international street and graffiti artists, each leaving their mark with murals and installations within the 36 apartments over 9 floors and cellars. Opening to the public for a month from October 1st, the building is due to be demolished in November, making it the largest temporary street art exhibition in France.
