One of the shows that opened tonight at the Guerrero Gallery was Alex Lukas’ solo “These Are The Days of Miracle and Wonder”. Along with the post-apocalyptic imagery that has captivated fans of the Philadelphia-based artist, Lukas brings back some of the desolate landscapes he has worked on in the past but now with more detail and cohesive composition. One of the shows we are really looking forward to next month is Yoskay Yamamoto’s (featured) return to LeBasse Projects. It’s hard to believe, but his last solo there was over a year ago and now he’s back with a new body of work entitled “Familiar Strangers.” Along with some sumptuous paintings with iconic characters and the thematic use of flowers (like the piece above), you can expect that he will continue to explore his sculptural work as well. As we mentioned in our preview, Black Rat Projects opened their doors a while back to a pretty impressive collection of the street scene a couple weeks ago. Just like the “Thousands” show last year, this exhibition gave fans a chance to see all their favorite street artists (including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Shepard Fairey (featured), Swoon (interviewed), Banksy, Barry Mcgee, Faile (featured) and Os Gemeos) at the same time under one roof. Alex Lukas and Matt Leines are about to show at Guerrero Gallery this weekend, May 8th, and both artists look to be showing some new direction. With Alex we were looking forward to seeing urban environments which are often used to depict a not so distant future where a disaster has overtaken mankind. UK based artist Jana Brike will be bringing her surrealistic “paintings” stateside for a solo show opening this weekend at the Distinction Gallery. Much like how her special technique blends the digital with more tradional methods, her artistic vision appears to be a strange yet fantastic melding of the human and plant word creating some unforgettable imagery. “The Lost Children” opens on May 8th and for those interested, check out more preview images after the jump…

Streets: EINE in Japan

It looks like UK street artist EINE was over in Japan for a show at Gallery 503 recently. Apparently, he had a lot of time to throw up some pieces in the street, mainly due to getting stranded because of the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland. Eine ended up painting 22 shutters and walls, though it looks like he only used the English alphabet for his fans in Tokyo… Take a look at more images after the jump.

Last weekend, Shepard Fairey (featured) held his latest solo show “May Day” at the legendary Deitch Projects in New York City and effectively shut down a small part of SoHo with the crowds he drew at the opening night festivities.
