First up, we show you the best of Christie’s Post War and Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales (February 11-12), including interesting works by Hernan Bas, Banksy, Zhang Huan, Terence Koh, Barry McGee, Richard Prince (above), Yoshitomo Nara, […]

Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’10 – David Kordansky Gallery

One of the most exciting galleries showing emerging art talent in Culver City, David Kordansky Gallery had a colorful and visually stunning booth at Art Los Angeles Contemporary that contained a mixture of mediums, including painting, sculpture, and photography.  It included artists from their excellent gallery roster, including Amy Bessone, Aaron Curry, Mark Flores, Ruby Neri, Anthony Pearson, Mai-Thu Perret, and Lesley Vance. Check out the rest of the impressive artwork from the Kordansky booth after the jump…

Preview: Victor Castillo – “Strange Fruit” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery (Los Angeles)

Showing alongside Miss Van tonight at Merry Karnowsky Gallery is Barcelona-based artist Victor Castillo. He follows up his debut show there last August with a new body of work entitled “Strange Fruit.” His deeply satirical work often takes what initially seem like harmless children – well, sausage nosed children – which on second look are engaged in situations they should not be involved in, with dangerous overtones all around. These children and their supposed innocence are appropriated for his commentary on subjects ranging from politics […]

Openings: Roa @ Galerie Itinerrance

As mentioned earlier this week, street artist Roa has brought his outside work indoors for his show in Paris at Galerie Itinerrance. We were wondering if the scale of the Belgium-based artist would translate well in a gallery setting, but it seems with plenty of large murals, he has answered with a resounding “Yes!” Looks like he has also preserved some of the nuances of his work that has generated the most favor with his fan base like the peeks at the inner anatomy of […]

Preview: Miss Van – “She-Wolves” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery (Los Angeles)

The last time we heard from French street artist Miss Van, she was opening her retrospective show at StolenSpace in London in October of ’09. Fans on this side of the pond will be happy to hear that they will have a chance to see her seductive “poupes” in person as she will be opening “She-Wolves” this Saturday night at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. For this body of work, her feminine “dolls” reflect on their predatory nature and and surrender to their animal […]

Kehinde Wiley x PUMA (Paris Opening)

You may recall a project we told you about recently between Kehinde Wiley and PUMA for the World Cup this year. If you remember, the exhibition of paintings Kehinde created of three African soccer stars as well as a portrait with all three together representing the unity of Africa traveled to Berlin for an official unveiling. It has now moved on to Paris and Guillotine has all the pics including the individual portraits. More pics after the jump.

Studio Visits: Jeff Koons – 17th BMW Art Car Artist Announcement

Since 1975, BMW has commissioned many legendary artists to add their vision of automotive design to their renowned “Art Car” program, some of which we saw on a visit to LACMA. From Andy Warhol to Alexander Calder to Roy Lichtenstein, each iconic artist makes their own unique artistic twist on the “Ultimate Driving Machine”. And for the 17th edition, Jeff Koons was selected to participate in this storied tradition. To celebrate, Jeff opened up his studio for a rare peek into his Manhattan “factory” located […]

Sickboy – “Logopop Bristol” @ Friend & Co. Gallery

This week will see somewhat of a homecoming for UK street artist Sickboy as he opens the second installment (first was in London) of his Logopop shows at Friend & Co. Gallery in Bristol this Friday, February 5th. Widely known in the streets of the UK for his signature yellow and red temples, Sickboy promises a site specific installation using mixed media and digital technology alongside his interconnecting Logopop pieces plus other original artwork.

Highlights: Recommended openings for Feb 3 – Feb 7

One month in and the art world is in full gear as we kick off the month of February. There are literally dozens of amazing noteworthy shows going off this weekend and next the world over. Two of the shows we’re most excited about here at AM is the return of David Choe (featured) to SF this Friday at FIFTY24SF and the west coast solo debut from Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama (featured) at Frey Norris, also in SF… so needless to say SF is the place […]

Openings: Sas & Colin Christian – “Inner Space” @ Opera Gallery (London)

AM dropped into Colin and Sas Christian’s debut UK show opening last night at Opera Gallery’s London location. When we first saw the preview images, which we showed you here, from husband and wife Colin and Sas, we knew that this would be be a must see show. Both artists had taken things to another level in terms of the scale that they worked to – Sas going big on canvas and Colin going supersize with his sculptures, the largest of the pieces being around 9 […]
