Openings: Chris Berens – “The Only Living Boy in New York” @ Sloan Fine Art

Last week, Amsterdam-based artist Chris Berens made his New York debut with a brilliant solo show at  Sloan Fine Art. Chris has been working hard on this show and came through with 39 detailed pieces to show for his efforts. As mentioned in our previews (here & here), Chris utilizes a mixed technique blending his heritage of studying the “old masters” with his unique brushstrokes on photographic paper to create a dream like effect. This beautiful hazy effect is something that is further illuminated by seeing his art […]

Sketchbook: Nate Frizzell

While visiting Nate Frizzell’s studio a while back, we had to opportunity to flip through some of his sketchbooks. It’s always a privilege to be able to look into the inner workings of an artist’s creative process and is one of our favorite things to do. Of course, we made sure to take some pics to share with our readers. Definitely expect to see more of these features here in the future. Take a look after the jump at some prelim sketches for completed paintings […]

Video: Gaia x No Longer Empty

One of the artists that we met up with this year at Art Basel, Gaia, recently collaborated with No Longer Empty (NLE) to paint a Chinatown pulldown gate in NYC.  Take a look at the time-lapse footage of the mural which was a closeup of one of his signature “Deny Me Three Times” images. Via Vandalog. Discuss Gaia here.

Scott Radke – Burrowing Owl Sculpture

Scott Radke (interviewed) recently posted up pics of a new sculpture – his interpretation of the “Burrowing Owl.” The piece is for what is turning out to be a pretty good show – the “A Cry For Help” benefit exhibition that we told you about last week scheduled for next month at Thinkspace.  Take a look at more views after the jump…

Streets: New Banksy – Camden (Regent’s Canal)

Banksy fan and photographer Mammal sent us over some photos of new stencils from the elusive street artist near Regent’s Canal in Camden. Well-timed as usual with the Copenhagen climate talks ending without a legally binding treaty, Mr. B dedicated one of his pieces to the subject (after the jump) as well as this piece seen above with a pretty sweet tag. Take a look after the jump at more images as well as a third piece spotted by another man on the scene – […]

ESPO – A Love Letter For You (Xmas Edition)

Looks like Steve “ESPO” Power’s “A Love Letter For You” crew has been working hard beautifying West Philadelphia in time for Xmas. With the last several murals (48th, 49th, and 50th) finished during a blizzard, the impressive project is completed, but hopefully the artwork will continue to remind the City of Brotherly Love of their namesake for many years to come. More images after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Gladstone Gallery

Gladstone Gallery, one of the most prestigious galleries in the United States, led by Barbara Gladstone, probably the second most famous art dealer next to Larry Gagosian, had a power-packed booth at Art Basel.  It featured photographs, paintings, and sculptures by some of the best artists in world, including Richard Prince, Anish Kapoor, and Elizabeth Peyton. See more images from the booth after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’09: Aqua Fair

This year’s Basel Week Miami wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Aqua Art Miami fair in the Wynwood district. Chock full of visual goodies from galleries we know and love to some newly discovered ones that are now on the AM radar. It was treat to experience some great art at this fair. Check out all the images including several pieces from Jin Young Yu (interviewed & seen above) after the jump.

Teaser: “Nat Finkelstein: From One Extreme to the Other” @ Idea Generation Gallery

You may have seen this iconic image of Andy Warhol with Bob Dylan in front of his “Double Elvis” (an uncut Eight Elvises sold for a record $100 million recently) during his “Factory” days, but did you know who the photographer was? Idea Generation Gallery will be holding a retrospective in London next year of recently passed away Nat Finkelstein. Although the American photographer and photojournalist was known for his involvement with the Black Panthers and as a political radical back in the day, he […]

Openings: Travis Louie – “Lifetime Companions” @ Shooting Gallery

Travis Louie (interviewed) opened his latest solo show, “Lifetime Companions” at the Shooting Gallery this past weekend. Consisting of nine new acrylic paintings, “Lifetime Companions” explores the relationships and origins of a cavalcade of Louie’s characters seen mostly through the eye of a wedding portraitist. With a narrative that delves deeper than any fans imagination could possibly muster, Travis closes out 2010 with an amazing show and one not to miss.  In addition, Louie surprised his San Francisco fans with eight preliminary sketches, including a […]
