Sketchbook: Ian Francis

Time for another peek inside a sketchbook. “Practice makes perfect” and if the old axiom is true then it may explain Ian Francis’ crazy skills with the brush. Ever the passionate artist, Ian is constantly honing his concepts and technique with sketches and studies. As AM observed in our recent studio visit (here), Ian’s studio was littered (certainly didn’t look like “litter”) with numerous sketches of his fantastic landscapes and hypnotic characters. Mostly utilizing just charcoal and graphite for what he refers to as “simple doodles,” Ian […]

Streets: Jef Aerosol

Famed French street artist Jef Aerosol is set to open his debut New York solo show “All Shook Up” tonight at Ad Hoc Art.  Look for brand new stenciled works as well as classic pieces on paper, wood, and found objects. Of course, as is custom with his “trade,” he set about getting up pieces all around town to coincide with the exhibition. Take a look at several other pics after the jump at all the street work which of course include his iconic red […]

Streets: Judith Supine

After his takeover of the New Image Art booth at Art Basel, it appears that Judith Supine found some time to do some traveling. That hasn’t stopped him from taking his art along and getting up in some unique locales. Take a look at another from the collage specialist after the jump…

Teaser: Jonathan LeVine Five Year Anniversary Group Show

James Jean (interviewed) recently posted up images of two small paintings (12″ x 12″) for the upcoming Jonathan LeVine Five Year Anniversary Group Show. The two pieces are beautiful although disturbing as they feature shoemakers, but also what appear to be children – bringing up thoughts of child labor (one of them seen smoking). An intriguing start to a show we are naturally excited about, considering the pedigree of artist that has come through the LeVine gallery through the years. It opens on February 27th […]

Highlights: Recommended openings (Jan 27 – 30)

As we gear up for February, the last shows of January are upon us this weekend. Los Angeles sees the debut of another new art fair in the form of Art Los Angeles Contemporary taking place at the Pacific Design Center and NYC welcomes Damien Hirst. The place to be this weekend appears to be Brazil though where Baseman (interviewed) and SHAG (interviewed) will be rocking things. As always, no shortage of goodness to go ‘round. Get out and support the arts! Check out the […]

Teaser: The Faile Bast Deluxx Fluxx Arcade @ Lazarides (Greek Street)

Probably the show that AM is looking forward to most next month would be the Faile and Bast UK show at Lazarides opening February 12th. Both floors of the Greek Street location will be taken over by the Brooklyn duo and long-time collaborator Bast in what is promised to be an truly immersive installation with “80’s populist culture” as the stated source of inspiration (perhaps referenced in the title and logo for the show seen above). Also as a tease, proportedly there will be an […]

They put together some nice pieces from artists such as Guy Denning, Miss Bugs, Beejoir, C215, Eelus and K-Guy. You can check out the pieces and bid here. With 100% of the proceeds going directly to the orphanage, it’s a definite win-win for all who participate in this very charitable event. More images after the jump.

Eli Broad Museum Location Search

It appears Los Angeles has now added themselves to the mix (joining Santa Monica and Beverly Hills) for possible locations of Eli Broad’s planned art museum. If you remember, one of the goals of Deitch after being named the director of MOCA was to convince Broad, one of his biggest supporters to keep his major contemporary art collection in LA. Howeever, one has to wonder why Broad, who has donated millions to LACMA and MOCA, would not just add his collection to those major institutions […]

It’s great to see more support from artists in our community as they rally support for the relief efforts in Haiti. The giclée print “Haitian Girl” measures 18″ x 24″ and is limited to an edition size of 50. All proceeds are being donated to Yéle Haiti. It is available immediately here, so go donate […]
