Trailer: Banksy – “Exit Through the Gift Shop”

So…  Pretty much all the speculations have been confirmed that Banksy indeed is premiering his documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop” at the Sundance Film Festival.  In fact, there is a website – www.banksyfilm.com as well as a trailer (seen above). Also updated on his website are all the snowy pics of the six new pieces he threw up in Park City, Utah – site of the film festival (seen after the jump). Banksy is suppose to appear on film and also speak although not […]

Highlights: Recommended openings for Jan 21 – Jan 24

The art machine calms down a bit this week as it rests up for the all the big openings coming up in February. That’s by no means to say there’s no shortage of goodness to go around this week. Maybe not as many openings as the last couple weekends, but there are two major shows opening after this coming weekend that will be turning many heads in their perspective locales – the multi-faceted return of the Grammy show and the Os Gemeos show in Italy. […]

Openings: Kevin Cyr & Jason Bryant – “Behind the Curtain” @ Raandesk Gallery

AM visited the Raandesk Gallery for the opening of a great show featuring two talented emerging artists, Kevin Cyr and Jason Bryant (previewed). Until recently, both worked as studio assistants for art star Kehinde Wiley, so it’s no surprise that they each have serious technical painting chops. Cyr, just selected as one of 10 winners of the 2010 West Prize, takes damaged and vandalized trucks and vans from the streets of NYC and depicts them realistically on a solid field of color – the isolation […]

Installation: Barry McGee @ SFMoMA – A Closer Look

After visiting Mike Shine’s outdoor carnival for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary, AM ducked inside to catch one last look at Barry McGee’s massive clustered installation (previewed).  Consisting of hundreds of drawings, personal pictures and patented patterns, McGee’s exhibit truly conveyed the multi-faceted breadth of his works.  Arranged in a seemingly haphazard, though obviously well thought out manner, Twist’s install was literally bulging at the seams, seemingly so that one would assume it was on the cusp of giving birth or expelling a whole new body of […]

Setup: Mark Jenkins – “Meaning is Overrated” & Aakash Nihalani – “On & Off (Often On)” @ Carmichael Gallery

It’s always interesting to see how street artists adapt their art to fit into a gallery setting, especially when they are so non-conventional (even for street art) like Mark Jenkins and Aakash Nihalani.  The duo will bring their “urban interventions” indoors tomorrow night at the Carmichael Gallery – Jenkins with “Meaning is Overrated” and Nihalani with “On & Off (Often On).” Take a look at more pics of the artists setting up after the jump…

Openings: Glenn Barr / THH70 / Joey Seeman @ The 4th Wall Gallery

Glenn Barr’s show at The 4th Wall Gallery (previewed) opened last weekend in Dallas with a fantastic new body of work. Sprinkled among paintings of his signature vixens were serpent women, bird-girls and other hybrid creatures. To round out the show, he also had drawings, prints, and his “Happiness” bronze on display. Also exhibiting along with Barr were THH70 & Joey Seeman.  Take a look at all the pics along with a video after the jump…

Interviews: Jeremy Geddes

We weren’t all too familiar with Jeremy Geddes’ work when we planned our coverage of the HK Venture show where Ashley Wood was the main draw for us. Seeing Geddes’ amazing visuals was definitely an eye-opener for us, so much so that we dedicated another article focusing in on his “cosmonaut” series of paintings. We caught up recently with the Melbourne-based artist for a question and answer session to learn more about him and his work. Full interview after the jump…

Teaser: David Choe – “Character Assassination” @ FIFTY24SF

David Choe will be returning to his roots this February 5th with a solo show at FIFTY24SF. Interestingly enough, David’s first gallery show ever, almost a decade ago, was at the fledgling FIFTY24SF gallery. For “Character Assassination,” Choe will be bringing a new body of paintings and prints – even some that were believed to be long sold out.  David recently sent us a teaser pic, however, we had to put it after the jump as it’s NSFW, not that anything David does should ever […]

Streets: Banksy at the Sundance Festival

Some very interesting developments over in Park City, Utah where the Sundance Film Festival is about to get underway. Apparently, about four new alleged Banksy stencils have popped up, with the one seen above being the best one so far. Adding to the intrigue are the rumors that the “Spotlight Surprise” documentary will actually be about Banksy and entitled “Exit Through The Gift Shop,” the title of a famous piece from his recent Bristol Museum show. What will be revealed? The true identity of Mr. […]
