Audrey Kawasaki – Laser Cuts

Audrey Kawasaki posted up a collage of images this morning on her japanese blog and we couldn’t help but notice another laser cut piece (NFS) in the upper right-hand corner.  We first saw her use this technique with a piece from “The Drawing Room” show and then another piece from the “Clowns!” show.  From what we hear, she owns a laser cutting machine…  so look for more of these delightful pieces in the future. Take a look at the ones she has done so far […]

Interviews: James “Dalek” Marshall

James Marshall, aka Dalek, is known for brightly colored, superflat paintings consisting of his signature Space Monkeys. But since his 2007 show at New York’s Jonathan Levine Gallery, entitled Desperate, Rejected and Angry, the military brat and once graffiti artist has been pushing the boundaries of his style, becoming more and more geometric and abstract. AM chatted with Marshall recently about British science fiction, art fairs and beyond. Read the interview after the jump.

Release: Mark Ryden Fur Girl lithographic poster

As previously posted, pop surrealist superstar Mark Ryden will be showing next month at top Tokyo gallery Tomio Koyama. However, it seems he can’t wait until then to share at least one of his new images with the public, as next Tuesday at 8am PST, Ryden will release Fur Girl as a limited edition lithographic poster. With its beautifully subdued color palate, and haunting image, this new print is sure to sell quick. Read all the details after the jump.

Setup: Manifest Hope – DC

AM is on-site at Manifest Hope DC and it is getting hectic at the gallery. It’s midnight here and the crew of over 30 volunteers are now running on Red Bull and Red Stripe. We are at ground zero of this awesome show and only a few days before the show goes live. With giant installations under construction from Mike Murphy and Kelly Towles, the place is abuzz with power-saws and drills. The other part of the crew is busy unpacking the never ending stream of boxes […]

Openings: Family First @ White Walls

The first great group show of 2009 went down last weekend at White Walls SF. Usually group shows are headlined by a few established artists and a bunch of lesser knowns, but “Family First” (previewed) featured a large and diverse group of great artists like Ian Francis, Andrew Schoultz, Richard Colman, Sylvia Ji, Shepard Fairey, Shawn Barber, Jim Houser, Mike Giant, Adam Flores, and AJ Fosik just to name a few… Be sure you stop by for a look if you haven’t already…you don’t see […]

Openings: Ericailcane @ Carmichael Gallery

AM was in attendance Saturday night for the opening of Italian street artist Ericailcane’s first Los Angeles solo show entitled “Man is the Bastard” (previewed) at Carmichael Gallery. The highlights of the show were the massive installation pieces that covered both of the gallery’s front walls, ominously greeting attendees with a taste of the absurd scenarios found in the rest of the work on display. Ericailcane’s intricate drawings and etchings, presented in a dream-like style reminiscent of childhood storybooks and fairytales, features clever imagery of […]

Teaser: Mark Ryden @ Tomio Koyama

One of the artists that most impressed us at Art Basel, Mark Ryden, is set to show in one of Japan’s most prestigious galleries Tomio Koyama in February. The show is entitled “Snow Yak,” and from the looks of things, Mark is continuing with “snowy white” as his color palette that we saw at the Tomio Koyama booth at Art Basel (here).  We obtained a few teaser images to whet your appetite til the show opens next month in Tokyo. Stay tuned as AM has […]

Openings: Deth P. Sun @ Rowan Morrison

Oakland artist Deth P. Sun had his first solo show in his hometown since 2002 yesterday entitled “This Too Shall Pass” at the Rowan Morrison Gallery. Especially eye catching was the wall of small paintings carefully fitted together seen above. The exhibition closes on February 14th with the release of his first published book, “I See It All.” The 64-page book replicates the sequence, size and paper-weight of one of Sun’s moleskin journals. Openings pics after the jump.

Releases: The Call I – Josh Keyes

As anticipated, it was announced that Josh Keyes’ next print will be of his piece from Art Basel Week, “The Call I.”  As demand for his work has skyrocketed, it has been increasingly harder for collectors to get their hands on his prints, let alone his originals. Well, here is a chance for a “easy” purchase hopefully as this will be the large edition release for the year with a sign & numbered run of 750. These will be an archival giclee on embossed hahnemuhle […]
