Openings: Damien Hirst – “End of an Era” @ Gagosian Gallery (Madison Avenue)

This past Saturday night, AM had the chance to tag along with British contemporary icon Damien Hirst at his opening at the Gagosian Gallery (Madison Ave). As stated in our preview, the show titled “End of an Era” was exactly that – an end to a highly notable period of Damien’s infamously publicized career where he made headlines with awe-inspiring and highly controversial achievements in the art world. This show contained the last of many prime examples of the British Bad Boy’s most renowned and infamous works – important iconic achievements […]

Openings: Saelee Oh – “Infinite Roots” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Saelee Oh capped off the trifecta opening alongside of Josh Keyes (covered) and Doze Green (covered) at JLG. The LA based artist filled the “gallery II” space with a multitude of mediums that cohesively brought together the theme “Infinite Roots.” Her upbeat works featuring female figures and animals floating in an organic environment interwoven with one another were fun to experience. Especially noteworthy were her hand cut paper images that expressed much via simple silhouette contrasts reminiscent of the renowned Kara Walker, another AM favorite. […]

Openings: Doze Green – “New Works” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Doze Green opened alongside of Josh Keyes (covered) at Jonathan Levine Gallery last weekend with some “New Works.” The new body of work showed off the artist’s gift for taking simple strokes and turning them into organic abstractions. We enjoyed the white on black gouache pieces that clearly showed his fluid and continuous line work, creating astonishing figurative images. Many of New York’s finest were in attendance at the opening including Eric White, Esao Andrews, Tara McPherson, David Ellis and too many old school street […]

Openings: Audrey Kawasaki – “Hajimari – a prelude” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

When hype is built up, rarely does the show ever meet the expectations. Once in a blue moon does one actually surpass the expectations – which is exactly what this show did. Audrey Kawasaki opened up her much anticipated body of work “Hajimari – a prelude” (previewed) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery last weekend in New York City. The sold-out show drew a max capacity crowd that overflowed from the packed gallery space into the adjacent hallways. There were three lines going the whole night – one to get […]

Studio Visits/Releases: Faile – “Warriors of the Night” Print & Bronze Sculptures

Faile’s been heads-down working on some fantastic goodies that will be released TOMORROW. At Noon EST (9am PST), the collective will release some original works on paper, a new print entitled “Warriors of the Night” from their “Lost in Glimmering Shadows” series and two astounding bronze sculptures. AM visited the studio to view the goods up close and personal, and like past projects, the craftsmanship is top notch and most certainly will not disappoint. We got all the details after the jump.

The solo was an accumulation of many of […]

Streets: Shepard Fairey x Levi’s Time Square Mural

Recently. AM had a chance to catch Shepard Fairey and his crew hard at work in the middle of Times Square for the launch of a special collaboration with Levi’s. In usual bold Obey fashion, the boys set up shop at the heart of the city to build a mural anchored by Shepard’s classic icon with a “pocketed” Levi’s twist. Not surprisingly the mural creation process drew a big crowd of fans and tourists eager to get pictures of Shepard much like his mural creation […]

Openings: Faile – “Law of Fives” Group Show @ Perry Rubenstein

Last night, AM visited Perry Rubenstein gallery for their 5 year anniversary show – “The Law of Fives.” This group show featured the works of FAILE (which we will focus on), but the exhibition also includes Zilla Leutenegger, Teresa Margolles, Robin Rhode and Richard Woods. Faile created an impressive installation utilizing their signature “Boxes” to go along with the 4 other featured artists. But, the exclusive stuff was behind the scenes where our friend Rob from The Most Beautifullest Thing got a little sneak peak at some future works from the […]
