Previews: “Moleskin V” @ Spoke Art

On April 7th, the fifth edition of the moleskin group show will be opening at Spoke Art in San Francisco. Moleskin V is curated by gallery owner Ken Harman and Sydney-based artist Rod Luff and features artworks created directly onto the ubiquitous moleskin sketchbooks that are commonly used by artists around the world. Streets: Tristan Eaton (Tampa)

Last weekend, Tristan Eaton spent some time painting a mural on the side of Bern’s Steak House in Tampa, Florida. The piece (arranged by CASS Contemporary) on the 60 x 30 foot was created in the LA-based artist’s signature patchwork style to honor the restaurant’s 60th anniversary and features Florida panthers intertwined with classical statues. Releases: James Jean – “Pomegranate” Print

James Jean (interviewed) recently released woodblock print that he created at the Adachi Institute in Tokyo. The limited edition (run of 50) features a young woman using the red color dripping from a pomegranate as makeup, a beautiful example of the Japan-based artist’s artistic vision and craftsmanship. On Saturday night (April 2nd), Arcadia Contemporary will be opening their inaugural exhibition at its new home in Santa Monica’s Bergamot Station Arts Complex after 16 years in New York. The group show entitled Made in California will feature work from their artists that reside in the “Golden State” including John Brosio (seen above), Michael Chapman, Jeremy Lipking, Julio Reyes, John Wentz, Aron Wiesenfeld, and Vincent Xeus.

This Saturday night, April 2nd, Amy Sol (interviewed) will opening her solo at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Entitled Garden Gamine, the set of new pieces continue to show her love for nature with flora and fauna surrounding her female characters. The delicate works feature the Nevada-based artist’s experimentations with oils in a full set of paintings for the first time. On April 1st, Galleri Benoni in Copenhagen will be opening a new solo from Joram Roukes entitled POV. For this exhibition, the Dutch artist has put together a series of mostly larger oil paintings featuring his observations of everyday life but through the prism of his imagination turn into surreal landscapes. Put together in almost a collaged fashion, these fragmented elements come together to form a cohesive composition that provide an “engaging narrative characterized by beauty, chaos and decay.” Discuss Joram Roukes here.

From 11th of March until 16th of April, BQ gallery in Berlin will be showing a solo exhibition by David Shrigley. Song For The Rat includes a series of signature drawings, as well as a single neon work, similar to the ones he did before for his two prior shows with the gallery. Previously seen as an ink drawing and oil on canvas piece, the “Labyrinth” image from Rustam Qbic recently took form as a large mural in Kiev, Ukraine, officially marking the beginning of the Art United Us project. Less than one year after their debut show SWIM 1 (covered), curators Yarrow Slaps from San Francisco and Auguste Somers of Los Angeles opened the next edition of their successful group show on March 18th.
