Baby Tattooville ’14: Late Night Live Painting With Rick O’Brien

Burning the midnight oil, surprise guest Rick O’Brien invited us in to see some live model painting at Baby Tattooville last night. Working his two subjects through different poses, the portrait painter loosely laid forms onto his canvas as attendees watched. Taking into account the lateness of the hour, the rumored haunted nature of this particular room at the top of the Mission Inn, and the costumed nature of the models, the session was certainly something to remember from this year’s event. Another highlight of the 8th annual Baby Tattooville is the live screen printing event with Tara McPherson and Andy Diesel from Diesel Prints. The prints will be part of the gift bag that all of the attendees will receive along with offerings from other artists. Returning to the massive Ace Gallery showspace in Beverly Hills after a successful solo there in 2010 (covered), the Date Farmers will be opening another exhibition tonight entitled Shit Ain’t Funny. Hailing out of the Coachella Valley, the two collaborative artists whose real names are Armando Lerma and Carlos Ramirez will be presenting works that deal with social and political issues of the working class. It is Saturday afternoon, its 100 degrees and Baby Tatooville is turned all the way up. The event is in full mingle mode as attendees join and speak with artists as they create the personal works for this year’s gift bags. Every edition of Baby Tattooville includes a “Secret Store” where attendees (in order of their seniority at the event) are allowed to purchase art merchandise and even original works form the participating artists. The highlight of this year’s setup were paintings that were used for this year’s print set including an stunning piece from Joe Sorren (seen above). Berlin’s BC Gallery is opening a new season with an interesting group exhibition simply titled Abstract that opened September 26th. Featuring works by nine international artists, this show puts a focus on non-figurative artworks along with its possibilities and advantages. Experimenting with geometrical forms, materials, mediums and colors, often juxtaposing black and white, featured artists show their take on abstraction. Tomorrow night (October 4th) in San Francisco, Inkflow will mark the return of Usugrow to Fifty24SF after showing there in 2007 and participating in a group show with his Shinganist crew back in 2009 (covered). Along with presenting his Bay Area fans with his distinctive original work filled with ornate calligraphy and his recognizable skull motif, the Japanese artist will also be releasing a new book titled USUGROW: Works 2007-2013 in association with Upper Playground.
