Studio Visits: Faile – “Fuel, Fantasy, Freedom” @ Gallery Ernst Hilger

A month ago, AM stopped by the Brooklyn studio space of Faile to catch a glimpse of their upcoming show at Gallery Ernst Hilger which opens tomorrow, July 2nd in Austria. Entitled Fuel, Fantasy, Freedom, this fresh body of work continues to push the boundaries defined by the collective. The show focuses on the pure imaginative energy that comes from childhood fantasies – stories and themes such as racing stock cars and flying rocket ships to realms filled with unicorns and beasts. Diverse in technique and mediums, this […]

Streets: Aryz (Spain)

Master muralist Aryz was recently in Granollers, Spain, where he spent more than two weeks working on this impressive new mural. Titled Priape and Dememter, the piece shows two Greek gods symbolizing fertility and nature. Slightly more realistic than the work we are used to from the Spanish artist, the imagery featured the mythological beings rendered with Spanish features. Dark haired, and with Demeter wearing a floral dress, they could be seen as Spanish countryside people instead of gods. Either way, this majestic image of […]

Streets / World Tour: Jeff Soto (Bordeaux, France)

Southern California native, Jeff Soto (interviewed), recently traveled to Bordeaux, France where he had a chance to work on several art-related projects. First up is this wall he painted for the Darwin project and Spacejunk, his fourth mural in France (also see Lyon here & here). The Riverside-based artist took care to incorporate local graffiti into his mural featuring some old school imagery, expertly painting on the difficult corrugated siding. In the back, he also took 20 mins to do some quick lettering, getting back to […]

Last weekend, Thinkspace Gallery hosted the opening for Erica Rose Levine’s show Empress in their project room (the same night as Jacub Gagnon & Brian Mashburn). Using primarily colored pencils, markers, and graphite, the Brooklyn-based artist created portraits of women and their “use of decoration and beauty as power.” The details she is able to achieve is impressive and we suggest you stop by to see the work in person if you are in the area before July 12th. Upcoming: Rosson Crow @ Musée Régional d’Art Contemporain Languedoc-Roussillon

Starting Saturday (June 28th) in France, in the heart of Languedoc-Roussillon in the town of Sérignan, the Regional Museum of Contemporary Art will be opening a show from Rosson Crow (featured). Showing through November 2nd, the exhibition will feature the young painter’s hallucinatory abstractions of decadent interior spaces, oftentimes embellished with elements more often seen in urban settings. This lends a modern twist to her work influenced by old world techniques, which leads to interesting juxtapositions. Discuss Rosson Crow here.

Openings: Jacub Gagnon – “World’s Collide” @ Thinkspace

Last weekend, AM stopped by Thinkspace to check out the almost sold-out solo from Jacub Gagnon (interviewed) entitled World’s Collide. Painted against a black background, the surreal portraits of his chosen creatures really pop and seem even more vivid. Full of whimsy and imaginative touches, you can see the Toronto-based artist thought carefully about each element of the pieces, from title to composition.
