Streets: COPE2 – Bowery & Houston Mural

Last week, the iconic corner of Bowery & Houston in New York saw a new mural take shape as COPE2 took over the location. Featuring his well known bubble tags and associated graf elements, the wall was soon filled with letterings from the NYC writer on a richly textured background. The last time we were able to experience Walton Ford’s work in person in New York was in 2011 when he blew us away with his surreal portraits of King Kong as well as his well known naturalistic paintings. Banksy’s Webby Awards Acceptance Video

Last week, the 18th annual Webby Awards named Banksy the Person of the Year in a surprise move. Of course, the elusive street artist was not on hand to accept the distinction awarded for excellence on the internet. The honor accorded Mr. B was a testimony to how well-known his art has become and how skillfully he is able to manage his online presence. Last week, Bay Area art fans saw the annual Art Market San Francisco come through town. The international art fair held at the Festival Pavilion – Fort Mason Center had galleries, artists, and collectors alike taking advantage of the one week of the year where art was in especially in focus in SF. Tonight in Chelsea, the locally-based Matthew Palladino (interviewed) will be opening a new show at Garth Greenan Gallery. We last enjoyed his work in New York back in 2011, and fans who attended that showing and plan to be present tonight will see that his work has evolved since to include three-dimensional elements to his repertoire. The same explorations of ideas of perspective can be seen in these new pieces as well Palladino’s well-honed sense of humor. Discuss Matthew Palladino here.

We were granted access during the set-up as Sixe Paredes (formerly known as Sixeart) was prepping the launch of his new exhibition on May 21st entitled Futurismo Ancestral: An Offering to Peru at Somerset House in London (curated by Approved By Pablo). POW! WOW! Hawaii Sacred Canoe Hokulea Project

Right after setting up the Taiwan event (introduced), the POW! WOW! Hawaii family got back to work taking part in an interesting project with The Polynesian Voyaging Society in Honolulu. What they put together was focused on the sacred canoe Hokulea on which legendary lifeguard and surfer Eddie Aikau lost his life while trying to get help for his friends between the Hawaiian and Tahitian island chains.
