Openings: “Space//Form” @ Breeze Block Gallery (Part 2)

Following directly on from Part 1 of our coverage of the busy Space//Form opening, AM now delves a little deeper pictorially into the artwork created for this huge group exhibition of 110 artists with a series of pictures where the art is more viewable (like the Mark Dean Veca installation above). To recap, all of the participating artists were given an identical 10×10 inch cradled timber panel by exhibition sponsor Ampersand as the medium to work on. The exhibition curator, Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis chose a brief […]

Showing: Adam Neate – “Dimensional Paintings & Editions” @ Elms Lester

Over the weekend, Elms Lesters hosted the opening for another solo (see 2011) from Adam Neate (interviewed) entitled Dimensional Paintings & Editions. The new body of work consisted of exactly that – his signature three-dimensionaly and richly textured paintings that pop right out of the wall and limited edition offerings. The almost sculptural quality of his pieces really need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. In some of the them, he was even able to include the cardboard his earlier work was associated with. Photo credit: Smart Hype. […]

Eric Shaw & Henry Gunderson – “Glint” @ Fecal Face Dot Gallery

The other weekend, Fecal Face Dot Gallery hosted the opening of a joint exhibition with local artist, Henry Gunderson (directly below) and Brooklyn-based Eric Shaw (above). The two artists’ work complimented the other nicely when displayed in the same venue. Each artist has their own style and take on using geometrical shapes and colors, creating images that were surreal and thought-provoking. Check out photos from the opening below.

Streets: SABER – “Skytagging” (New York)

Earlier this morning, we gave you a heads up about SABER (interviewed) taking to the skies of New York CIty. Later at approximately 1:30pm he launched his aerial assault on the Big Apple. Utilizing five jets in precision formation, Saber again stated his mind and tagged the atmosphere with his words. Similar to his drop in Los Angeles, there were shout outs to Art Work Rebels (AWR) and Mad Society Kings (MSK), but this time the socially conscious writer used his own money and time to […]

Showing: Maya Hayuk – “Multi Versus” @ Cooper Cole Gallery

Earlier this month, Maya Hayuk made her return to Toronto (see 2011) for a showing at the Cooper Cole Gallery. Entiteld Multi Versus, the new body of work continues to explore the NY-based artist’s fascination with patterns, geometric shapes, and symmetry all rendered in a kaleidoscopic mix of colors.  The exhibition will run through October 6th so head over for a look-see if you are in the area. Brendan Monroe x New York Times

Those of you who are fans of Brendan Monroe (interviewed) and his work should pick up the latest copy of the New York Times. Some of his organic imagery has made it in as illustrations for an article entitled Rethinking Sleep on the cover of The Sunday Review section. You can check out the online version here if you can’t get your hands on the hard copy. Overtime: Sep 17 – Sep 23

Overtime stories of the week: First confirmed images (from 2001 in Mexico) of Banksy have been revealed. At MOCA, having five billionaires on its board isn’t enough to solve its problems. Ongoing issues plaguing The Power Plant in Toronto, as more turnover has occurred at the highest levels. Eli Broad may be angling to loan from MOCA’s art collection for his own museum. Mao Sugiyama, artist who cooked & served own genitals during performance, faces indecent exposure charge. Larry Gagosian misses crucial court appearance because […]

Upcoming: Sylvia Ji – “La Catrina” @ CHG Circa

For those fans of  Sylvia Ji (interviewed) out there who particularly liked her “Day of the Dead” imagery, you are in luck. She will be opening a new solo on November 3rd (the Saturday right after the actual Mexican Holiday) at the new CHG Circa Gallery. Presumably, La Catrina will feature paintings from the Los Angeles-based artist centered around the masks, skulls, iconagraphy and other imagery associated with “Dia de los Muertos”.
