Tomorrow night, December 9th, the third rendition of Lush Life will be showing at the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle. As usual, the lineup is a stellar collection of purveyors of pop surrealism and includes the likes of Femke Hiemstra, Chris Berens, Josh Keyes, John Brophy, Travis Louie, Marco Mazzoni, Jessica Joslin, Joseph Park, Mia Araujo, and more. Starting this Friday (Dec.9), New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art will be pulling one of their permanent collection’s most beloved works out of storage and putting it back on display. Calder’s Circus was created by Alexander Calder while he was living in Paris in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Using his unique skills over several days, the influential writer got up this abstract and multicolored gem for his fans in South Florida to enjoy. Not only were the street artists active in Miami for Art Basel Week, the writers were out in full force as well. Take a look at this sweet new wall from Jersey Joe aka RIME, whose indoor work we last saw in Los Angeles in August. Tomorrow night, December 8th, the Phil Stern Gallery will debut a new exhibit by award-winning photographer Phil Stern and artist David Flores. If you remember a few months back, Flores painted a mural in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles based on a James Dean photograph shot by the Stern (covered). Some of you may remember – a little while back, we posted this great video from Allison Schulnik on our facebook page. Seeing her deliciously thick and textured paintings at the Mark Moore booth (more on this later) at PULSE during Art Basel Week reminded us to share Mound with our readers here as well. Schulnik actually went to CalArts to specifically study experimental animation and her excellent technique certainly shows. Discuss Allison Schulnik here.

Tomorrow night (December 8th) in Venice, California, Casey Weldon will be presenting a new set of works at Gallery 1988. Groty will be the first solo show in Los Angeles for the Brooklyn-based painter and will feature more of his surreal portraiture that we have enjoyed in various group shows up to this point.
