Openings: Zeng Fanzhi @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

Since the Gagosian Gallery opened a branch in Hong Kong earlier this year, some international heavy hitters like Damien Hirst and Richard Prince have already graced their walls with solo shows. For their most recent exhibition, which opened a couple weeks ago, a more local star, Zeng Fanzhi, was the feature attraction. The retrospective draws from work in the last 20 years with some pieces culled from the Chinese artist’s personal collection, tracing his career of exploring the human figure with his powerfully introspective paintings. The twin brothers Ad Deville and Droo who make up Skewville first came to prominence around 1999, when their wooden sneakers became an ubiquitous sight hanging from New York power lines. AM was fortunate enough to visit their studio hidden in a basement in Bushwick, NY as they prepared for their upcoming show entitled Anti-Social Networking at the Black Book Gallery in Denver opening on October 7th. AM recently witnessed the return of Lisa Yuskavage to David Zwirner as the New York based artist unveiled a new series of paintings in her third show with the gallery since 2006. Seen were her classic female nudes depicted in cartoonish yet erotic compositions. The color palettes she selected were vibrant, rich and diverse which complimented her wide selection of environments well. Openings: MODE 2 – “Offerings” @ Lucas Carrieri Gallery

British graffiti writer and fine artist MODE 2 recently held a solo exhibition of fresh works at Germany’s Lucas Carrieri Gallery. With this being his first solo show in Berlin, the series entitled Offerings consisted of large canvases that centered around the raw female form. A first impression might be that it’s just gratuitous nudity for the sake of display, but if you’ve followed the work of MODE 2, you can see the raw forms and voluptuous curves point to the complexity of the female […]

Showing: Adam Neate – “Dimensional Paintings” @ Elms Lester

Earlier this week, Elms Lesters hosted the opening for a set of new works collectively and aptly entitled Dimensional Paintings from the inventive Adam Neate (interviewed). While his landmark solo in 2009 at the same London gallery introduced his fans to the new textures and three-dimensional aspects of his new work, this latest exhibition shows a maturity, refinement, and comfort in the technique that is evident in the impressive depth and complexity of the pieces currently on view. He even included some updated old […]

In anticipation of the ambitious Three Amigos three-part extravaganza – a series of three separate yet unified solo shows with Dan Colen, Nate Lowman, and Dash Snow at three different yet equally symbolic venues in Rome – Gagosian Gallery attempted to kick things off in advance with a solo from the one artist they represent; Dan Colen. Entitled Trash, the body of work is a massive departure from the body of work showing concurrently at Rome’s Palazzo Rospigliosi and stays true to its signifier in […]
