Cy Twombly 1928 – 2011

The world lost a true pioneer and iconoclast today as Gagosian Gallery announced the news of Cy Twombly’s passing. Often cited as an artist whose aesthetic did not fit neatly into any one style during an age when his contemporaries oftentimes were defined by their movements, Twombly’s work was challenging in multiple ways. His poetic calligraphic scribbles and repetitive graffiti were unlike anything created at the time and critics were divided as to whether it even constituted artistic merit.  Validated during his lifetime and subsequently […]

Video: Ekundayo

Ekundayo (interviewed), who we hung out with at POW WOW earlier this year, recently sent us this video of him getting up on Kapahulu in Hawaii.  Not a stranger to wall work in his home state (see here and here), the LA-based artist painted this newest piece after being inspired by an old Hawaiian legend of which he explains in the video above.  The project was supported in part by 33THIRD.com and UMIWORKSHOP.com. Streets: London Instagram Roundup

I have been kindly asked by the nice guys here at AM if I would like to submit a weekly street art article from my Instagram feed. Without hesitation I accepted… For those of you who haven’t heard about Instagram, it’s an app on the iPhone where you can upload and share pictures, so all photos are taken with the iPhone. I mainly focus on the streets of Shoreditch and areas of Hackney, London, taking photographs of new and old streetart. So, here goes, I […]

Openings: Barry McGee @ Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London

AM has been keeping a watchful eye on Continental European shows featuring works by Barry McGee. Whenever the cashflow gods have been on our side, we’ve booked the necessary flights or trains to attend as well. This was the case with the 2010 joint show with Danish artist HuskMitNavn at A.L.I.C.E. Gallery in Brussels, and the 2009 three-man show (which also included Ed Templeton and Raymond Pettibon) curated by Aaron Rose at Berlin’s Circleculture Gallery. However, the last time McGee exhibited in the UK was […]

Happy 4th of July!

Everyone here at AM (at least on this side of the pond) wanted to wish you a happy fourth of July! We thought that we would take this opportunity to review some of the American Flags that have been reinterpreted over the years by artists we cover here. This is by no means an exhaustive list as the iconic symbol has been a very popular inspiration for artists whether it be a patriotic or anti-patriotic creation. More flags after the jump from artists including Aaron […]

Openings: Liu Bolin @ Eli Klein Fine Art (NY)

Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening of Chinese artist Liu Bolin’s. For his first solo in New York, Liu took the city by the horns as he made the most of the past few weeks with his signature self paint & photography sessions by continuing his iconic Hiding In The City series at some of the Big Apple’s most unique locations such as the 9/11 tribute and Bowery & Houston Mural. The special opening at Eli Klein Fine Art was packed from the beginning as fans […]

Streets: Conor Harrington (Ireland) Part II

As we mentioned in our last article, Conor Harrington (interviewed) is traveling his home country of Ireland and it looks like he has cowboys on his mind. This newest wall is in Ennis and was painted for the Ennis Street Festival. Look for one more piece to come as well as a video from the talented Andy Telling, who previously created the Crossing Lines video with Conor in the Middle East (and the sweet Fame Festival footage in Madre). More pics after the jump…

Openings: San & Escif – “See you in Croatan” @ Fifty24SF

Spanish artists, San and Escif finally made their stop at Fifty24SF on Thursday for the opening of their show See you in Croatan. For the past month, the two friends have journeyed all along the coast of California, gathering inspiration to create works on walls and paper and documenting it on their blog, EL TERCERO EN CUESTIÓN. Regarding their project, “the mission was to work as far away as possible from doctrines, imperialisms and linear reasoning, searching for beauty in errors and fortuitous tools, working […]

Openings: “Zero to Sixty” @ Corey Helford Gallery

On Friday night, the Corey Helford Gallery celebrated its 5th anniversary by showcasing the artwork of more than 50 different artists from all across the world. With such an array of styles and talent, it may have seem like a difficult task to pull off, but the exhibit, titled Zero to Sixty, was nothing short of outstanding. Artists who were featured during the special celebration included the likes of Todd Schorr, Joe Sorren, Sas & Colin Christian, Ron English, Natalia Fabia, SHAG,  Greg Simkins, David […]
