Streets: Eine – LA Weekly Building

UK-based street artist Ben Eine, who recently showed in SF (covered), made the trip down to Southern California soon after as we saw him at both the D*Face opening and of course participating at the Art in the Streets exhibition (covered) at the MOCA. Just like in San Francisco, he found time to work on some street typographical magic, this time on the LA Weekly building. More images of the crossword themed piece after the jump…

Streets: Blu & Ericailcane (Palestra)

Although we didn’t see any of his work in the Art in the Streets exhibition at the MOCA last week (probably related to the controversial buffing of his mural), most people still consider Blu one of the most important street artists at the moment. In fact, both him and fellow Italian artist Ericailcane (who recently collaborated on a mural in Bologna) are some of our favorites out there and they reaffirm our love for their work with this recent mural they are working on in […]

Openings: “Facemaker” @ Royal/T

Facemaker opened at Royal/T last Wednesday, curated by Kathy Grayson, director of The Hole NYC and former director of the Deitch Projects. Just in time for Art in the Streets, the eclectic Culver City art space has teamed up with the New York gallery to put on a street-pop frenzy, displaying a playful amalgam of colorful imagery centered on different interpretations of the face. With street artists Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf, KAWS, and SWOON on the roster, alongside Clare Rojas, FriendsWithYou, Ben Jones, […]

Streets: Invader (Los Angeles)

As you know, there is a little show called Art in the Streets set to open to the public this weekend in Los Angeles. Besides work inside the MOCA and the surrounding walls, some artists like Invader here could not resist hitting up other parts of the city with their work.  Take a look at more detailed pics of this tiled piece in Culver City as well as another piece in Echo Park after the jump…

Videos: Pep Williams Talks to Saber

Take a look at this recent interview with SABER (interviewed) recorded by his friend and photographer Pep Williams. They touched on many topics including stories of growing up together skating in Venice and how Saber started as an artist, but most interesting of all is the discussion about who’s painting what in the MOCA Art in the Streets show. Yes, it’s getting close and AM will be taken over by coverage of the monster show soon. Take a look at part II of the video […]

Openings: ROA – “New Works” @ White Walls

The White Walls gallery opened the doors to Belgium-based street artist, ROA’s first San Francisco solo exhibition Saturday night. Leading up to the show, information and images were shrouded in secrecy as ROA methodically put on the final touches up to the show’s opening (as evidenced by his hands covered in black paint). The show featured his signature array of finely detailed spray painted animals, sometimes in various stages of dissection and decay.  The work was done on found objects (such as metal panels, metal […]

Openings: “Martha Cooper : Remix” @ Carmichael Gallery

Saturday night, Martha Cooper (interviewed) launched a special group exhibition at LA’s Carmichael Gallery. If the upcoming Art In The Streets Exhibition at the MOCA is this year’s Superbowl for street & urban art, then consider this show the preceding playoffs. Many of the players in the monster retrospective made an appearance to pay homage to the godmother of street art photography. Cooper’s curated list of artists were asked to artistically reinterpret her iconic urban photographs and included AM favorites like Futura, Swoon, Jose Parla, […]

Publications: Roger Gastman – “Tools Of Criminal Mischief”

Our friend Roger Gastman has been a busy boy. First he was the consulting producer for Exit Through the Gift Shop, then he curated the Sanrio anniversary art show, and later in 2011, he’ll be helping the MOCA to curate their Art in the Streets exhibition. Somehow, he still found a way to squeeze some time in to write a new book on graffiti. Bringing together street art stories from current day to all the way back in the 1940’s, it’s definitely one to grab […]
