Swoon – “Anthropocene Extinction” @ ICA Boston

As we previewed the installation process a couple weeks back, Swoon (interviewed) has now completed her site-specific installation Anthropocene Extinction for The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA). Commissioned by the ICA as the fifth – and largest to date – project for the Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall, SWOON’s impressive creation that addresses humanities impact on the environment is anchored by a mural that spans the entire length of the lobby and rises 40 feet to the ceiling. A large scale portrait one of […]

Teaser: Eric Haze – “New Mathematics” @ Known Gallery

We last caught up with Eric Haze when he was in Los Angeles working on an installation for The Standard Hotel and at the New York 3D Art Book signing in May. For fans on the West Coast, you’ll be pleased to know that after just returning from Beijing, the NY graffiti legend will be hitting up Los Angeles with a more in-depth showing at the Known Gallery after giving you only a taste of his skills at MOCA’s Art in the Streets. Of course, […]

Streets: West Hollywood Library Wrapup (Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, RETNA)

Although the new public library in West Hollywood isn’t set to open until the fall, the three large murals by Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, and RETNA are now complete. Billed as an extension to MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition, the project (which we have been following) was apparently conceived by Jeffrey Deitch himself and will also include some additional indoor work from Fairey. The work however may not be permanent as the city has only committed to hosting the murals through July 2012. More […]

Streets: RETNA @ West Hollywood Library Project (Part II)

Over the weekend, the West Hollywood Library in conjunction with MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibit took the first step in bringing three street art legends together to give the structure a well-needed and colorful facelift. One side of the wall will feature Kenny Scharf’s signature characters (more on that later), while on the opposite side of the structure RETNA (featured) continued to cover his wall with his well-known street letters. During the first day of the process, the MSK calligrapher was able to cover […]

Preview: “Miss Danger on the Loose” @ LAB ART Los Angeles

Street art – characterized by its illegal nature, activity in rough neighborhoods late at night, demanding physical stamina, and the occasional running from cops – has historically been a young man’s endeavor.  Thankfully, there have been notable exceptions.  In San Francisco, the late Margaret Kilgallen helped revolutionize the genre and form the influential Mission School art movement.  Swoon graced the walls, doors, and subways of New York with her gorgeous wheatpastes of friends, family, and those whose stories she wanted to bring to light.  Los […]

Openings: “Margaret Kilgallen: Summer / Selections” @ Ratio 3

Opening to a packed crowd last night, Ratio 3 honored the memory of Margaret Kilgallen (1967-2001) with her first solo exhibition in San Francisco in 13 years. Along with her husband Barry McGee and other artists, the art movement now commonly referred to as the Mission School (which drew inspiration from the urban culture of San Francisco’s Mission District as well as comic, folk and graffiti art) has been a huge influence to the Street Art that we know of today. Kilgallen’s work is now […]

Swoon – “Thalassa” Installation @ New Orleans Museum of Art

Look familiar?  Yes, it’s another sweet installation from Swoon (interviewed), this time at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). Just as stunning as her light-infused piece from the Art in the Streets exhibition, this suspended ocean goddess is entitled Thalassa and is made of wood & paper and located above NOMA’s Great Hall with layered tentacles created from scavenged materials stretching to the mezzanine. Inspired by her reaction to the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster, the piece will be on display until September 25th. Take a look at photos […]

Preview: Jeff Canham, New Bohemia Signs, and ESPO @ Guerrero Gallery

Steve Powers aka ESPO has been a busy man. First, came his part in the epic recreation of the immersive Street Market installation at the MOCA for the Art in the Streets exhibition. Then, he jetted to Copenhagen, where he opened his Days exhibition at the V1 Gallery (covered). Now comes word of a joint show involving Mr. Love Letter For You along with the artists at New Bohemia Signs and Jeff Canham, an artist whose work also utilizes the craft and traditions of sign […]

Set-up / Teasers: Retna – ‘The Hallelujah World Tour’ (London) @ The Dairy

Retna has been keeping himself busy recently — among other things, by participating in the Art in the Streets exhibition at MOCA, Street Cred at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, and painting the tail of a business jet in Geneva for VistaJet. He’s currently in the UK for the London limb of his Hallelujah World Tour which began in New York City in February (featured).  The pop-up event is being held at the Dairy, with the opening taking place on the evening of Wednesday […]

Showing / Viewpoints: Sage Vaughn – ‘Children of a Lesser God’ @ Lazarides Gallery

The first UK solo show by LA-based Sage Vaughn (referred to in early May) opened a few weeks back at Lazarides Gallery in London with a title ostensibly borrowed from the 1980 play by Mark Medoff or its subsequent film adaptation. While Children of a Lesser God presents no radical thematic or stylistic departures for Vaughn, the exhibition is a strong one — especially the part in the gallery’s main space on the ground floor, where canvases from the artist’s Wildlife series have been hung […]
