Streets: West Hollywood Library Wrapup (Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, RETNA)

Although the new public library in West Hollywood isn’t set to open until the fall, the three large murals by Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, and RETNA are now complete. Billed as an extension to MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition, the project (which we have been following) was apparently conceived by Jeffrey Deitch himself and will also include some additional indoor work from Fairey. Over the weekend, the West Hollywood Library in conjunction with MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibit took the first step in bringing three street art legends together to give the structure a well-needed and colorful facelift. Look familiar? Yes, it’s another sweet installation from Swoon (interviewed), this time at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). Just as stunning as her light-infused piece from the Art in the Streets exhibition, this suspended ocean goddess is entitled Thalassa and is made of wood & paper and located above NOMA’s Great Hall with layered tentacles created from scavenged materials stretching to the mezzanine.
